Sunday, November 4 finds the 2-5 Orlando Magic traveling to Texas to take on the 5-2 San Antonio Spurs. Orlando arrive following a blowout loss at home to the Clippers while the Spurs on a three-game win streak.
Last season the teams split their two game season series. The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 42 of their 59 matches.
It’s not like the Magic came into this season expecting to be world beaters, but the hope was they would take a leap upward. Through seven games they’re looking to be lottery bound once again.
At issue is the makeup of the roster which features a glut of front court players like Jonathan Issac, rookie Mo Bamba and Nikola Vucevic whose is functioning as the team’s point forward.
Orlando rank near the bottom in every key offensive category except offensive rebounding and are middle to the bottom of the pack in defensive categories.
Jonathan Isaac injured his ankle in the game versus the Clippers and is listed as questionable for Spurs as is Jonathon Simmons (wrist). Timofey Mozgov (sore right knee) is out with no timetable for return.
San Antonio Spurs
Seldom does a trade happen where both sides win but that seems to be the case with the Spurs – Raptors trade. Kawhi Leonard has fit in seamlessly in Toronto and DeMar DeRozan is finding new levels to his game. DeRozan is averaging 27.9 points and 7.3 assists through seven games a marked improvement over his previous best in assists.
Gregg Popovich continues to defy the pundits with his ability to find a way to win regardless of this roster dynamics. Of the top squads currently on the playoff ladder only the Warriors and Spurs are teams who’ve consistently been among the leaders. Slowly, but surely Pops is getting his defense in order and don’t be surprised if a point guard gets added sometime soon.
Derrick White (plantar fascia in his left heel) is expected to be held out until the latter part of November. Rookie Lonnie (torn meniscus in right knee) will be out for six to eight weeks with a likely return early to mid December. Dejounte Murray (torn ACL in right knee) is lost for 2018-19 season.
