Monday, November 29th, finds the Orlando Magic facing the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season. Orlando played a back-to-back set on Friday/Saturday losing to both the Bulls and Cavaliers to extend their losing streak to six games.
The 76ers welcomed back Joel Embiid who was impressive but the 76ers lost in double overtime to the Timberwolves marking Philly’s eighth loss in the last 10 games.
Last season, the teams played three times with the 76ers taking all three contests and riding a current four-game win streak versus Orlando. The Magic holds the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 79 of their 121 matches
Orlando Magic
While the Magic landed two quality rookies in this past summer’s draft it was the Cavaliers who were celebrating the return of their rookie star Evan Mobley on Saturday.
Since Mobley got injured on November 15th the Cavaliers haven’t won losing five in a row. With his return, Cleveland got immediately back into the win column.
The Magic rookies made their mark with Franz Wagner delivering 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Jalen Suggs chipped in 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and four steals although he’s still struggling with his shot (3 of 10 FG and 1 of 4 from deep).
Wendell Carter Jr. led the way for Orlando posting a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds
Terrence Ross (back) left the match Saturday and is questionable for Monday. He’s one of five players who may be out joining E’Twaun Moore (knee), Mo Bamba (back), Cole Anthony (ankle), and Michael Carter-Williams (ankle).
Markelle Fultz (knee) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) continue to rehab toward a return sometime this season.
Philadelphia 76ers
After missing nine games due to COVID-19, Joel Embiid returned to the court but the Minnesota Timberwolves played spoiler. Embiid was phenomenal registering a massive 42 point, 14 rebound double-double plus three assists, a steal, and two blocks.
During his absence, the 76ers won just two of those nine matches and plummeted from the top of the Eastern Conference to the 11th seed. Tobias Harris was also back after missing two games (and eight of the last 13) adding 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
The game went to double overtime but Embiid was unable to hit the final shot falling by a single point to the Wolves.
The closing minute of the match proved costly first with Tyrese Maxey turning over the ball to allow the Wolves to take the lead followed by Anthony Edwards blocking Embiid’s final shot.
Most of the 76ers are back although Shake Milton (groin) is questionable for Monday and of course, Ben Simmons (suspension) and Grant Riller (knee) remain out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
The Magic cover the spread 50 percent of the time on the road while the 76ers cover the spread only 33.3 percent of the time at Wells Fargo. It’s important to not get fooled by the latter mark given Joel Embiid was missing in four of their home games.
The 76ers have dealt with more than their fair share of injuries and that factor has impacted Philly’s ability to not just cover the spread but collect wins. Prior to Embiid getting injured they were leading the East and with him back on the court things should improve.
That’s especially true at home where the 76ers were 29-7 last season and 31-4 the season prior. Although I’m not as confident Philly can cover that large of a spread so I’m leaning to the Magic keeping it closer than 15.5 points.
