Orlando hasn’t won more than thirty-seven games since 2010-2011, which was also the last time the Magic was over .500. That team was led by the core of Dwight Howard, Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis.
It also acquired Gilbert Arenas in the last substantial season of his career. He shot thirty-four percent off the bench, signed with Memphis in the offseason, played seventeen games and hasn’t been seen on an NBA floor since.
This year’s Magic may not finish over .500 but there’s optimism it could crack thirty-seven for the first time in what certainly feels like a while.
“Steady Progress” could be the MO for this team. Orlando hasn’t added any major pieces outside of the draft but it has kept the same core that has produced terrible teams for years and sprinkled in some youth here and there. Now, it’s looking like a back-end contender in the Eastern Conference.
Apparently, all it takes is a core of Aaron Gordon, Nic Vucevic, Evan Fournier and DJ Augustin. The first three names are combining for fifty per game.
Augustin may be the best of all of them, though. He’s shooting 48/44/90 if you go 2p%/3p%/FT%. So while he only scored eleven per game, he scores the most efficiently of the four. He also averages the most assists (4.9) and the fewest turnovers (1.4). He isn’t flashy but he plays good point guard. There are some front-end contenders that could use a guy like him.
The Timberwolves concluded their three-game road trip in Boston, where they looked like they never had a shot, despite Kyrie Irving on the sideline and nearly sixty points between Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Those two and Tyus Jones are the only three playing big minutes for Tom Thibodeau. That’s because Minnesota has some injury problems of its own.
Derrick Rose, Jeff Teague and Robert Covington all missed the Boston game with ankle problems. None of the three are listed as any more than day-to-day and Teague and Covington were both questionable ahead of the Boston game.
So perhaps at least those two return for this game. If Minnesota doesn’t get some depth back soon, it’s going to plummet in the West, which might just be what the front office hopes will happen.
