Orlando Magic
After its 6–2 start, Orlando won at a 25 percent clip in the first half.
It begins the second just outside of the NBA’s bottom three, which each get 14 percent of the ping-pong balls in the NBA’s Draft Lottery.
The team with the worst record can’t fall as far as the others, however. As far as tanking goes, the lower in the standings, the better.
The fourth spot from the bottom, where the Magic is now, gets 12.5 percent of the balls. That percentage drops each spot higher in the standings.
It’s three games better than Detroit and six better than Minnesota. The Timberwolves have some some young talent. The Pistons don’t but also don’t lack for effort.
Houston may prove formidable in a tanking competition, especially once it blows things up before the trade deadline. The Rockets have two fewer wins than the Magic with the same number of losses.
Of course, if a chunk of Orlando’s rotation remains hurt and Nikola Vucevic, now a two-time All Star and under contract for another two seasons, were to go down, the Magic would be as bad as anybody.
Aaron Gordon has been listed as questionable to play for the first time since January 31st, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
Evan Fournier hasn’t been able to stay in the lineup this season and he’s set to hit free-agency this summer. Head Coach Steve Clifford said he’s unlikely to play, per Dan Savage of orlandomagic.com.
Miami Heat
Miami must feel good about where it is. The dismal start is behind it and it has already started to stack up wins.
The Heat is 18–18 and sixth in the conference. It’s half a game behind New York and one behind Boston in the fourth spot.
Bam Adebayo didn’t play a week ago at New Orleans but Miami won by 10 points anyway. Adebayo won’t play in this one either, according to Orlando Magic Daily on Twitter.
The Heat will lean on KZ Okpala and rookie Precious Achiuwa, who was born in Nigeria. They combined for 34 minutes and scored 13 points with 10 rebounds in that last game against the Pelicans.
The Heat won’t sneak up on anybody like it did last season. It has to not just stay healthy for the rest of the regular season, but get better.
That often involves struggle. The core, which in some ways is younger than it was last season, hasn’t gone through much, aside from the injuries.
At the least, this will be a chance for Okpala and Achiuwa to cut their teeth against an opposing All-Star.

Free Orlando Magic vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction: Orlando hangs.
Maybe Orlando gets a lift if Gordon returns. Maybe it starts the second half the way it started the first. Maybe Vucevic teaches Miami’s backups a thing or two.
