The main goal for the Lakers right now is to tread water and stay in contention until Lebron James and/or Anthony Davis can return. There’s perhaps no better team (aside from the Rockets) to do that against than the Orlando Magic.
Orlando has gone full on into rebuild mode after this week’s Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier, and Aaron Gordon trades. Things went as expected in game one, a 112-105 loss to Portland although the Magic did cover the +9.5 spread.
Orlando Magic
You need your program to watch Orlando as of late. Their starting lineup vs. the Blazers consisted of Chasson Randle, Dwayne Bacon, Khem Birch, Chuma Okeke, and James Ennis III.
While those might not be household names, Orlando did do a good job of limiting Portland to 112 points. Then again the Trail Blazers were playing on the back to back and were without Damian Lillard (rest).
+7 isn’t a lot of points to give to a Magic team that figures to be pretty bad from here on out. Then again, do the recent trades even matter to Orlando? They were just 15-29 even with Vucevic, Gordon, and Fournier.
It’s hard to see the Orlando offense getting any better without those players though. Vucevic alone was averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds per game. One thing for sure is that the Magic won’t get worse, as they are dead last in the NBA in field goal percentage (43.2%).
Los Angeles Lakers
It’s a great spot for the Lakers, who were able to break a 4-game losing streak since losing Lebron James with a 100-86 win over Cleveland on Friday night. It still wasn’t a great offensive showing for L.A though.
Since James hurt his ankle on March 20th vs. Atlanta, the Lakers have been held to 101 points or less in 4 of 5 games. They’ve lost by 17 at both New Orleans and Phoenix over that span, but being home on Sunday should help.
Did L.A finally figure out their roles in the win over the Cavs or was that just a by product of playing Cleveland? The starters still didn’t look the best, as Dennis Schroder led that unit with 17 points.
In fact, Markieff Morris’ 13 points were the only other double digit production from a Lakers starter. They do have Montrezl Harrell off the bench though, and he put up 24 points while grabbing 10 rebounds against the Cavaliers.

Hard to call a side on this one. The Magic aren’t as good as their close game with Portland on Friday night as the Blazers were on 0 days rest and playing without Damian Lillard.
The Lakers also aren’t as good as their win over the Cavs last time out would indicate. Cleveland laid an absolute egg in that game and were also playing without Collin Sexton. The only wager here is on the total.
