Saturday, November 19th, finds the Orlando Magic playing the Indiana Pacers for the first of four scheduled meetings and begins with this baseball set in Indy. Orlando will host on January 25th and February 25th.
The Magic began a back-to-back set on Friday beating the Bulls 108-107 while the Pacers also played Friday defeating the Rockets 99-91.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Magic winning two of the three contests. The Pacers hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 68 of their 119 matches
Orlando Magic
When the Magic began the season 0-5 it seemed like they were going to be fully invested in the tank. Since then they’ve played close to .500 basketball (5-6) with the majority of the wins versus clubs considered in the playoff mix (Warriors, Mavericks, Suns, Bulls).
That they’re accomplishing three of the five wins without the services of their standout rookie Paolo Banchero or Jonathan Isaac who was the Magic’s top player prior to injury speaks to the depth and potential of this roster.
Offense remains the issue for Orlando as they average 109.9 points per game ranking 21st overall. They shoot 47.5% from the field and 33.6% from the perimeter ranking eighth and 24th respectively.
Defense is their stronger suit as they hold opponents to 113.3 points per game ranking 13th overall and limit opponents to 46.1% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking 12th and ninth respectively.
The Magic limps into this contest although they got back some players on Friday. For this second game of the back-to-back Cole Anthony (oblique) and Moritz Wagner (foot) are questionable.
Paolo Banchero (ankle), Markelle Fultz (toe), and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are out indefinitely.
Indiana Pacers
In direct contrast with their competition, the Pacers excel offensively and have ample work to do to shore up their defense. They rank third for scoring, producing 117.9 points per game on average.
Indy shoots 46.4 percent from the field and a robust 38.1 percent from the perimeter ranking 19th and seventh respectively.
Defensively, the Pacers allow opponents to score 116.8 points per game ranking a lowly 28th. Indy allows their opponents to shoot 46.7 percent from the field which is tied with the Cavaliers and Hornets for 16th.
On the perimeter, Indy allows opponents to shoot a blistering 39.1 percent on average ranking 29th with only the Spurs behind them.
Daniel Theis (knee) and Chris Duarte (ankle) are both out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Magic are 8-4 ATS in their last 12 games against Indiana.
- The Pacers are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Orlando is 5-11 SU in their last 16 games.
- Indiana is 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:
Tanking is on pause at least in this match as both clubs are comprised of young assets and talents who want bragging rights. The issue is the Magic will struggle to score and the Pacers forget there is 94 feet on the basketball court — not 46!
While Orlando is playing better, Indy has been one of the hottest teams winning 5 of 6 (7 of 9) and have won three games in a row.
Typically I’d lean toward the defense, but in this situation, Indy has the edge because they have players capable of defending whereas the Magic’s best scorers are sidelined.
The pace advantage also leans to Indy as the Magic’s best games are against slower-paced clubs (Mavs, Suns) but Indy runs the fourth fastest pace. Indy won both second games of their B2B’s scoring an average of 124.5 points with a nine-point margin.
So while the spread is a tad rich, I like the Pacers to win and narrowly squeak by to cover. Oh- and there is the little matter of competitive rookies – Banchero is out but that won’t stop Ben Mathurin from wanting to make a statement.
