Magic vs. Pistons Gameday
Game 2 between the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons occurs on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m in the NBA Playoffs. The Magic shocked the Pistons in Game 1, winning 112-101, and have pundits wondering if this will be a long series.
All five Magic starters scored in double digits, led by Paolo Banchero with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Franz Wagner had arguably his best game since returning from injury with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Conversely, the Pistons had just two players score in double figures, with Cade Cunningham scoring 39 while Tobias Harris had 17.

Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons Odds & Last 5
The teams split this campaign, each winning twice, although one of those Magic wins came with most of the Pistons’ core being rested.
This is the fifth meeting between the clubs in postseason history, with Detroit holding the edge three series to one. It’s been since the Dwight Howard era that these clubs played in the postseason.
To finish the season, the Magic were flailing, hitting some major lows and seldom looking like a squad to be afraid of. They were in the mix to finish as high as fifth but fell into the Play-In and needed both opportunities to reach the playoffs.
In contrast, Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core.
The Pistons are favored by an 8.5-point spread with an over/under of 218 points.
Magic Stats
Orlando ranks 18th (114.2) on offense and tied for 13th on defense (113.6). Additionally, the Magic are 17th in net rating (+0.6) and possess the 14th-quickest pace (100.56).
The East’s eighth seed averages 115.7 points per game while its opponents average 115.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Orlando averages 26.5 (15th) and 43.4 (19th), respectively.
Orlando’s team leaders* are Paolo Banchero for scoring (22.2 points) and rebounds (8.4), Jalen Suggs for assists (5.5) and steals (1.8), and Goga Bitadze for blocks (1.0).
While the Magic only shoot 34.3% from the perimeter as a team, they have four players who shoot above the league average from deep.

The East’s top-place Pistons average 27.5 assists (13th) and 45.6 rebounds (eighth). Detroit scores 117.5 points per game while its opponents average 109.6 points.

Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons bottom line:
After the weekend and all the series had begun, the only home team favorite to lose was the Pistons. It was sort of ironic that just as the Pistons were starting to get some well-earned respect, they fell in the first game and looked like a team that had some serious holes in the roster.
In fairness, the Pistons typically beat up on smaller squads, but the Magic may have been the absolutely worst draw for Detroit, given they are just as big, can defend as well, and have more offensive weapons.
In the vein of it’s only one game but… the Pistons will likely take Game 2, but don’t kid yourself, this series could be a dog fight.

Magic Pistons Free Pick: Pistons -8.5
Here is my Magic Pistons free pick.
Orlando is finally fully healthy and looks like the defensive squad most pundits expected to vie for a top four seed in the East prior to the season start.
Anthony Black and Franz Wagner specifically looked great, and while Banchero played bully ball, it was Jalen Suggs who got the game ball. Suggs was EVERYWHERE on the court, and although he’s a guard, he was the player who stymied the lob pass to Jalen Duren repeatedly.
Prepare for an old fashioned, grueling mucked up series as the Magic appear to have rediscovered the defense that had pundits raving about them this past offseason.
Typically, when a top-ranked favorite loses the first game of the series that squad returns and blows out the opponent. I’m not fully convinced that’ll be the case given Jamahl Mosley’s strategy was spot on and there are only so many tweaks Detroit can make.
For example, asking Daniss Jenkins to be an integral part of the offense in order to win feels like a stretch for a player who only recently got upgraded to a full contract from a two-way contract.
Still, Detroit is at home and will be playing with desperation because falling down 0-2 on their home court is not an option.
To that end, take the Pistons to win and cover.
