(16-20) Orlando Magic vs. Chicago Bulls (10-27)
Wednesday, January 2 the Orlando Magic face the Chicago Bulls for the third time this season. In their last game, the Magic lost to the Hornets on New Year’s Eve. The Bulls last played on Sunday in a loss to the Raptors.
Last season, Chicago swept their series and the teams split their two meetings of this campaign. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 59 of their 108 matches.
The youthful Magic squad arrived in Charlotte having collected two impressive wins over the Raptors and Pistons. Unfortunately, their good fortune ran out as the Hornets trounced them by 25 points.
Four players registered double-digit scoring in Charlotte but Orlando struggled to put points on the board. This issue isn’t new as the Magic aren’t consistently capable of scoring and that lack of offense is why Orlando reside outside the seeded teams in the East.
Things get even trickier for this match given two of Orlando’s best playmakers might not be available in Chicago. To wit, Nikola Vucevic (left calf injury) and D.J. Augustin (right ankle) are listed as questionable.
Jonathon Simmons (right ankle sprain) is also uncertain and Timofey Mozgov remains out indefinitely.
New head coach Jim Boylen has refocused the young Bulls on playing defense as their identity. They play with a purposeful approach at slowing down the pace and are highly physical and aggressive. Over the past 10 games, the Bulls have the sixth ranked defense.
That system serves two purposes. It gets the team to buy in on the defensive side of the court. And it affords the team time to develop chemistry offensively it’s also likely they’ll be able to maintain a low ranking and therefore a high draft pick (even if it’s not the most exciting brand of basketball to watch).
Bobby Portis Portis (sprained right ankle) will be out until mid-January. Denzel Valentine (ankle) is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Bulls are 8-2 in last 10 head to head contests
- Bulls are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The over-under is 0-10 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Orlando Magic vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction:
This match likely won’t register high on the excitement scale especially if Vucevic and Augustin can’t play. The Bulls are tailor made to play an exciting up and down system generating offense off defense like the Thunder do. Instead, Boylen has them utilizing this pre-2000 system of walking the ball up the court
While Orlando will struggle to score. Maybe they’ll shock us and decide to play to their youthful athleticism, but if they don’t this will be a low scoring contest.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Place your bet based on over/under
Odds are off as of posting, but neither game between the clubs this year has hit 200 cumulative points. Given the status of Vucevic and Augustine look to bet under if the over-under is close to 200.
