Saturday, December 18th finds the Orlando Magic facing the Brooklyn Nets in their third meeting this season. Brooklyn won both prior matches on November 10th (123-90) and 19th (115-113). They’ll play once after this on March 15th in Orlando.
Both teams are severely shorthanded with the Magic nursing copious injuries and the Nets without numerous players who are in quarantine.
Orlando is playing the second game of a back-to-back set having lost 105-115 to the Heat on Friday while the Nets last played Thursday in a 114-105 winning effort versus the 76ers
Last season, the squads played three times with the Nets taking two of the three contests. The Bulls hold the advantage all-time having won 95 times of the club’s 177 meetings.
Orlando Magic
Given the NBA postponed two Bulls games with players out for health and safety it’s odd the Magic used the hardship exemption to sign four G-League players in order to play the Nets Friday and curious why the Bulls couldn’t do the same.
The four players were Aleem Ford, Admiral Schofield, B.J. Johnson, and Hassani Gravett. Orlando’s two-way players are Mychal Mulder and Ignas Brazdeikis although the latter is in quarantine.
The other players out for Orlando are Terrence Ross, Moritz Wagner, Mo Bamba, and R.J. Hampton all in quarantine – listed as questionable. Cole Anthony (ankle) and Wendell Carter Jr. (leg) are questionable but Carter left the court in a wheelchair on Friday.
The Magic haven’t had Markelle Fultz (knee), Jonathan Isaac (knee), Michael Carter-Williams (ankle), or E’Twaun Moore (knee) all season plus Jalen Suggs (fractured thumb) is out indefinitely.
In the loss to the Nets, Franz Wagner led the Magic in scoring with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Chuma Okeke posted a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds while Gary Harris and Robin Lopez scored 20 and 18 points respectively.
Brooklyn Nets
Kevin Durant led his shorthanded Nets in the victory versus the 76ers with a double-double of 34 points and 10 rebounds plus eight assists, and a block.
Blake Griffin and Nic Claxton each scored 18 while Patty Mills (14) and Cam Thomas (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
The big news out of Brooklyn is the franchise has switched gears to allow Kyrie Irving to practice with the team and play in road games. Although Kevin Durant does need the help it’s also sending a message that Irving is treated differently than all the other players on the team.
Personally, I wonder if this is GM Sean Marks way of showcasing Irving so he can feature him as a trade chip.
Seven Nets are in quarantine and won’t play Saturday including LaMarcus Aldridge, James Harden, James Johnson, DeAndre Bembry, Bruce Brown, Jevon Carter, and Paul Millsap.
Other decisions have to be made as Kevin Durant (ankle) is out while Nic Claxton (wrist) is questionable. If both are out the Nets will need to also sign a G-League player given they only have seven other players available and that’s assuming David Duke (hip) plays.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Magic are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Nets are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Both teams are severely limited although the Nets have more experienced players available. Still, this could be a trap game for the Magic especially if Cole Anthony plays and gets on a hot shooting streak.
That said, Brooklyn has the rest advantage and like KD did on Tuesday it won’t be surprising if he suits up even though the injury report says he’s out.
