On Sunday, March 21st the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics meet for the second time this season.
The Celtics hold the all-time record between the clubs with 67 in 118 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with Boston taking all three contests.
Orlando Magic
The Basketball Gods can be cruel and for the Magic especially so with injuries ravaging the team. This season has been particularly harsh losing both Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz, on top of each member of their core missing significant time.
Entering Friday, Orlando was dealing with a season-long nine-game losing streak and facing the offensive juggernaut Nets. However, with Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier back from lengthy injury absences, Steve Clifford finally could implement the team’s typical systems.
Gordon had broken 20 points in scoring on just three occasions in his prior 21 games this season but shattered that mark versus Brooklyn with a season-high 38 points.
Fournier also was a factor scoring 31 points. Nikola Vucevic delivered another standout effort with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds plus eight assists and two steals.
In addition to Isaac and Fultz, the walking wounded list is long — Cole Anthony (rib), Terrence Ross (knee), James Ennis (calf), and Michael Carter-Williams (illness) are all out.
Boston Celtics
Marcus Smart missed 18 games with a calf strain and while he was out the Celtics played .500 ball, winning nine and losing nine games.
While his absence was noticeable his presence back in the rotation hasn’t equated to turning the tide for Boston. Those five matches with Smart back have resulted in a single victory against the lowly Rockets who’ve lost 19 in a row.
There is no shame in losing to the Nets and Jazz but defeats to the Cavaliers and Kings raise concerns over the Celtics struggles. In the latter of these losses, the Bean Town crew failed to score 100 points.
Jaylen Brown led Boston with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Four other Celtics reached double-figures including Kemba Walker (16), Jayson Tatum (15), Daniel Theis (14), and Robert Williams (12).
In his post-game interview, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens comments called out the effort of “some” of his squad without naming individuals.
“You have to be so engaged to win an NBA game. When you’re not, you don’t. We’re not.”
Stevens isn’t the type of coach to yell and scream so this is about as close as you’ll get to a rant from Stevens.
Romeo Langford and Tristan Thompson are both currently dealing with health and safety protocols, neither played on Friday versus the Kings and both are expected to miss this match.

The fly in the ointment of that equation is Gordon and Fournier could be using these matches as trade deadline auditions while Vucevic will be a tough cover for Boston. My guess is the Celtics get the victory but don’t cover the spread.
