As many as five Canadians could be on the court Wednesday, December 8th when the Oklahoma City Thunder face the Toronto Raptors for the first time this season.
OKC ended an eight-game losing streak in Detroit erasing a 16 point deficit and more importantly the memory of their last game while the Raptors beat the Wizards on Sunday.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Every player pines to get right back on the court to erase the memories of a rout. Unfortunately, after suffering the worst loss in NBA history the Thunder had three days off with nothing to do but reflect.
As I noted in the Thunder – Pistons preview, no one will remember Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (concussion), Josh Giddey/Derrick Favors (flu), or Kenrich Williams ankle all missed the Grizzlies game – just that the Thunder lost by 73 points
The big question was whether the players’ pride would take precedence over the franchise tanking effort. Based on how hard OKC fought in the comeback effort we know who won that battle.
SGA was aggressive from the tip leading his team with a double-double of 30 points and 13 assists plus two rebounds, and two blocks. Giddey offered 12 points and five assists while Favors chipped in six points, five rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Williams showcased his full array of skills with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, four steals, and two blocks. Yeah – I think it’s safe to say that quartet makes a difference.
Lu Dort who did play in the infamous game registered 28 points (five 3-pointers), two rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Toronto Raptors
Preseason I earmarked some potential underdogs who could outperform expectations — the Heat, Raptors, Wolves, and Warriors. Through seven weeks, two were on the money (Adebayo’s injury will impact Miami but they’ll be a playoff beast) and two are yet to be determined.
While Minnesota rides the rollercoaster, I’m still bullish on the Raptors. The Bucks and 76ers stumbled when their core was injured but once Middleton/Holiday and Embiid/Harris returned the wins followed.
Similarly, consider Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, and OG Anunoby have appeared in three games this season and two of those were Siakam’s first after offseason surgery on a minute restriction and shaking off the rust.
Toronto is uber young and lack reps together so it’s going to take time but having the experienced core trio to help integrate rookies like Scottie Barnes is imperative. Khem Birch isn’t in the same wheelhouse but his presence is equally missed.
Goran Dragic isn’t with the team and likely won’t return but the 35-year old, 13-year vet is included in the team age and experience averages. Remove him from the equation and 5-year pros VanVleet and Siakam (both 27) are the most experienced vets on the club.
Nick Nurse has his team practicing every day in Toronto which is paying dividends based on their resurgent defense and they play 12 of the next 16 at home.
Anunoby and Birch’s return will only bolster their progress albeit it’s likely they’ll go through another adjustment phase but that’s a problem Nurse would gladly embrace.
I could be on an island, but I still think this club with everyone healthy could move up into a secure playoff berth and at worst vie for a top play-in seed.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Thunder are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-3-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
SGA and Dort are Canadians who get up for games at home but the Raptors have a trio of Canadians (Birch is questionable) who’ll be motivated to end the Thunder win streak at one!
