The San Antonio Spurs started this season on a rough stretch, but have turned things around quite nicely. Gregg Popovich and company find themselves all the way up to the 6 seed in the West heading into the all star break.
The Spurs have a great chance to pick up one more W before a long layoff as they play the Thunder who are on a quick turnaround. OKC slowed things down on Wednesday night in an 87-78 loss to Dallas.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City loss in Dallas came as the Mavericks also played without Luka Doncic. The Thunder and Dallas combined for a 17-12 fourth quarter in some absolutely atrocious basketball.
The good news about the 0 days rest is that the all-star break is upcoming so the Thunder can put all hands on deck. The problem with that is the hands on deck really aren’t that helpful in this rebuilding year.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander logged 35 minutes vs. the Mavericks, shooting just 5-15 from the floor and finishing with 15 points. Gilgeous-Alexander had just 13 points in the last Thunder game, which wasn’t until last Saturday.
Even on extra rest the Thunder couldn’t hang with a Dallas team missing their best player. OKC did beat the Spurs 102-99 on February 24th, is another low scoring game upcoming? The 220 total seems sky high.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have battled through a 10-day COVID pause and have won two of their last three. That includes a pretty tough stretch in which San Antonio has beat the Pelicans, lost in OT to the Nets, and dominated the Knicks.
San Antonio looked great in the 119-93 win over New York on Tuesday, which also came with the Spurs playing on 0 days rest and after going into OT with Brooklyn the night before.
The 119 points on Tuesday also came against the Knicks’ #2 defense in the NBA. That gives Spurs backers some hope heading into a matchup with the Thunder who are 10th in the league in defensive efficiency.
DeMar DeRozan is ending the ‘first half’ of the season on a high note, dishing out 11 assists in each of the last three games. With the Spurs still having 4-5 guys on the COVID illness list, DeRozan has become a nice facilitator to the players who are healthy.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Thunder are 7-3 ATS last 10 road games
- Thunder are 0-3-1 ATS last 4 on 0 days rest
- Under is 4-1 in Thunder last 5 road games
- Spurs are 8-17 ATS last 25 as a favorite
- Thunder are 1-6 ATS last 7 in San Antonio
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
It’s just really hard to back the Thunder in this one heading into the all-star break. OKC is a decent 8-10 on the road this season, but they couldn’t do anything against a bad Dallas defense on Wednesday night.
The Spurs are at risk of getting complacent themselves heading into the all-star break, but San Antonio has played some good basketball lately. OKC just has nothing beyond Gilgeous-Alexander though.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Spurs -6.5
Another big night from DeRozan fuels the Spurs to a double digit win heading into the all star game.
