Monday, December 20th finds the Oklahoma City Thunder facing the Memphis Grizzlies in their second meeting of the season. The first meeting was the infamous 73 point match when the Grizzlies routed OKC 152-79 and the teams will play once more in OKC on March 13th.
The Thunder arrives fresh off a 104-103 clutch time win versus the Clippers on Saturday while the Grizzlies played Sunday in a 100-105 loss to the Blazers.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Thunder hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 64 of their 96 matches
Oklahoma City Thunder
While OKC took a ton of heat for the 73 point loss to the Grizzlies what got lost in the narrative was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Derrick Favors, and Kenrich Williams were all out.
Before jumping on well they have other players consider that SGA scored the clutch time winning bucket against the Clippers, Giddey posted a line of 18 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight points and both Favors and Williams are critical particularly on the defensive side of the court.
It was the second game in a row Gilgeous-Alexander took a 3-point shot at the game end and should’ve resulted in two victories but for a 61 foot Hail Mary basket from Devonte Graham.
Luguentz Dort kept the Thunder in the match early and finished with 29 points and five rebounds. SGA scored 18 with six assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
Tre Mann (11), Aleksej Pokusevski (10), and Darius Bazley (10) were the other double-figure scorers with Bazley getting demoted to the bench for the first time this season.
Only ONE team reports no injuries or players in health and safety protocols the Thunder.
Memphis Grizzlies
For the first time since December 8th, the Grizzlies lost a basketball game and just the second time in their last 12 contests. Coincidentally, that’s precisely how many games Ja Morant has been sidelined.
During this stretch, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks have carried the Grizzlies but on Sunday they came up a tad short. Brooks did his part with a career-best 37 points along with three rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Bane had an off night shooting 1 of 8 from the perimeter (including a 3-point that did everything but drop to tie the game late). Jackson played only 22 minutes scoring 11 points but took only six shots.
Steven Adams flirted with a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds (4 OR), plus five assists, and three steals. Kyle Anderson was the only other double-figure scorer with 11 points.
Morant is out of quarantine and will ramp up his conditioning for a return while Brandon Clarke who missed his ninth game is listed as questionable for Monday as are Zaire Williams (ankle) and Santi Aldama (calf). Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games.
- The Thunder are 10-5 ATS in their last 15 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Memphis’ last 9 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of OKC’s last 6 games on the road.
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
If there was ever a game the Thunder wants to win (or at least be competitive) you can beat it’s this match. Although the objective is to tank — pride will play a bigger factor than draft picks on Monday.
That said, the Grizzlies haven’t lost consecutive games since November 24th/26th. I’ll take the Grizzlies to rebound for the win but OKC to keep it close (and if the ball is in Gilgeous-Alexander’s hand at game end — watch out!).
