Thursday, December 2nd finds the Oklahoma City Thunder facing the Memphis Grizzlies in their first meeting of the season.
Memphis last played on Tuesday, defeating the Raptors while the Thunder are playing the second game of a back-to-back set having hosted and lost (110-114) to the Rockets for the second time in three days.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 64 of their 95 matches
Oklahoma City Thunder
While the Thunder keeps their sights set on the draft lottery in June this week offered an opportunity to improve their position with consecutive losses to the Rockets.
Houston started the season losing 16 of 17 matches but a recent winning streak gave the young roster inspiration to keep up the winning which they did by extending their win streak to four games in a row with their two victories versus the Thunder.
What isn’t debatable is this young Thunder squad will play hard in every match but they need everything to run smoothly in order to collect wins.
It’s not going to help their record this season but it will pay dividends in the future with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, and Josh Giddey gaining invaluable experience in clutch time situations.
Once again, the Thunder were in the match at clutch time but coughed up a 15-point lead. SGA scored a season-best 39 points but the shot he needed to potentially win the match rimmed out.
Five Thunder players registered double-digits including Luguentz Dort (19), Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (12), Tre Mann (11), and Ty Jerome (11).
OKC is dealing with a flu bug that kept rookie Josh Giddey and Derrick Favors out of the lineup Wednesday and they’ll be questionable for Thursday. Kenrich Williams (ankle) and Mike Muscala (ankle) are also questionable.
Memphis Grizzlies
Without their cornerstone Ja Morant, the Timberwolves have pulled off consecutive victories against the Kings and Raptors. For opposing squads, they are having to figure out what the revised scheme is since Morant has the ball in his hands so much.
From the Memphis side of the equation, it’s forcing them to play better defensively which is something they weren’t doing prior to Morant’s injury.
On Tuesday it was Jaren Jackson Jr. who stepped up to take advantage of the lack of depth up front for the Raptors. He led the offense for Memphis with 25 points, six rebounds, five blocks, and nailed four of his seven 3-pointers.
Desmond Bane stepped up in the absence of Morant scoring 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block. The other double-figure contributor was Canadian Dillon Brooks who chipped in 17 points, four rebounds, an assist, four steals, and a block.
Memphis used their size and depth to take advantage of areas the Raptors typically win such as rebounding (54 to 44) particularly the offensive glass (18 to 11) and scoring in the paint (44 to 34).
Memphis reports Morant will be out approximately two weeks with the sprained knee. Zaire Williams (knee) is questionable and Sam Merrill (ankle) is unlikely to participate Thursday.
