Monday, December 6th finds the Oklahoma City Thunder playing the Detroit Pistons in their first meeting of the season.
Both teams are mired in eight-game losing streaks each losing on Thursday. The Thunder registered the worst loss in league history as they fell by 73 points (79-152) to the Grizzlies while the Pistons lost 103-114 to the Suns.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the clubs with 73 wins in 141 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with the Pistons winning both contests.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Tanking is hard – especially when you lose a game by 73 points! No one will remember that the Thunder top scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, or the top assist and rebound man Josh Giddey were sidelined.
Or that veteran Derrick Favors and quality reserve Kenrich Williams were all sidelined either due to injury or the flu.
Nope, all that anyone will remember in history is that the Thunder registered the worst point differential loss in NBA history. OKC now owns the worst home and road losses.
Five Thunder players reached double-figures with Luguentz Dort leading the way scoring 15 but when your opponent has nine players in double-digits and the top scorer has 27 along with a trio scoring between 17 and 19 points it’s easy to understand how the game got out of hand.
Not to ignore the key categories the Thunder lost like rebounding (26 to 53), fast break scoring (9 to 29), made 3-pointers (11 to 19) and a ridiculous 24 to 82 points scored in the paint.
Derrick Favors and Josh Giddey missed the last match with the flu and Kenrich Williams who missed the last three with an ankle sprain are all off the injury report so presumably available.
Mike Muscala (ankle) has been upgraded to probable while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is in the concussion protocol program.
While everyone points to the -73 differential of the Thunder game it’s important to note there are two teams with fewer wins (and one tied with OKC) with the Detroit Pistons one of those clubs with only four wins versus the Thunder’s six.
Suffice to say this match is a battle of the teams trying to tank for the top draft pick but if the Basketball Gods are fair Detroit won’t win it two years in a row.
In the loss to the Suns, the Pistons battled with Jerami Grant scoring 34 points, Isaiah Stewart posting a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds and rookie Cade Cunningham putting up 19 points, five assists, two rebounds along with a steal and a block.
Kelly Olynyk is out for six to eight weeks recovering from a knee injury while Isaiah Livers (foot) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Pistons are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The Pistons are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.

Hopefully, Giddey is good to go so fans get to witness a showdown between the first (Cunningham) and sixth draft picks of 2021. Grant also faces his former team who were the ones to develop his skills as a youngster.
It’s not ideal for the Pistons to be facing the Thunder the very game after the embarrassing loss but the question is will the Thunder value making up a game in the tank column over collecting a win and helping the Pistons?
I’m banking on Grant wanting to show his old club how valuable he is and leading the Pistons to the win BUT a much closer differential by the Thunder.
