Thursday, February 18 the Oklahoma City Thunder take on the Atlanta Hawks in the clubs’ second meeting of the season. The Thunder won the first contest on February 26th 118-109.
The Thunder hold the all-time record between the squads with 69 victories in 136 meetings. Last season these clubs played once with Oklahoma City winning the contests.
Oklahoma City Thunder
With the Thunder continuing to showcase what a franchise with an embedded culture can do they had to shift their rotations and even then the club wins.
On Sunday four of the five typical starters were out either due to injury or rest. Among the four replacing them were just turned 19-year old rookie Aleksej Pokusevski plus Ty Jerome and Moses Brown making their starting rotation debuts.
The latter two spent the majority of their season with the Thunder G-League affiliate the OKC Blue. Pokusevski had a breakout performance with career bests in almost every category. The result was a team going beyond deep into their bench defeating the Grizzlies.
In the loss to the Bulls on Tuesday, it was Moses Brown who had the breakout performance with 20 points, 16 rebounds (half on the offensive glass), and five blocks. Brown accomplished this in 30 minutes prior to fouling out.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an uncharacteristic inefficient night with eight turnovers and while he scored 21 points 17 occurred in the first half.
It was the first time the Thunder had rested Al Horford in consecutive games and not in a back-to-back situation (read: we need to lose more games for that draft pick).
Bazley (shoulder) and Luguentz Dort (toe) have missed four and two games respectively and are listed as day-to-day. George Hill (thumb) remains out while the trade that brought Meyers Leonard to OKC won’t impact the team as he’s done for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
The timing of the firing of Lloyd Pierce seemed to coincide with players returning healthy and potentially always was the plan since Nate McMillan was brought in as an assistant.
Since McMillan took over the Hawks haven’t lost (6-0), yet the obvious takeaway is Pierce might have the same record if he’d been coaching with the players who finally returned off the injury list, particularly Bogdan Bogdanovic.
While rumors are still swirling about John Collins being on the trade block he reminded the league of his potential delivering a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds along with four blocked shots versus Houston.
Trae Young also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 assists while Danilo Gallinari led the Hawks in scoring with 29 points. Kevin Huerter (16), Tony Snell (15), and Nathan Knight (15) were the other double-digit contributors.
Clint Capela (heel) and Onyeka Okongwu (adductor) are questionable for Thursday. Kris Dunn (ankle/knee), De’Andre Hunter (knee), and Cam Reddish (Achilles) are out.
