Saturday, December 10th the OKC Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers meet for the first of two scheduled meetings. OKC will host the second match on January 27th.
This is the fourth match of OKC’s five-game road trip having lost to the Grizzlies 102-123 on Wednesday while the Cavaliers are completing a back-to-back set having lost 95-105 to the Kings on Friday.
All-time the Cavaliers have the advantage of winning 68 of the 119 matches. Last season, the teams played twice with Cleveland winning both contests.
OKC Thunder
The Thunder are in the middle ground of the rebuild. As of this writing, they sit a half-game ahead of the Lakers but 1.5 games out of the play-in spot.
While the team never quits and is riding a magical season by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander you have to believe at some point they’ll switch gears.
It doesn’t make sense for OKC to keep pushing for wins especially if the result would be missing out on getting a play-in spot and also not nabbing one of the coveted bottom lottery seeds.
Presumably, they’ll continue to try to win games at least until the All-Star voting is completed in order to get SGA into the big game for his first appearance.
After that’s accomplished it would also make sense for the team to back off trying so hard to win (despite Adam Silver’s warnings) and get fully committed to tanking.
The Thunder score 116.4 points per game ranking sixth. OKC ranks 23rd shooting 46.0% from the field and ranks 20th from the perimeter shooting 34.0%.
Defensively, the Thunder rank 29th for opponent points allowed per game with 117.9 scored. Their foes shoot 46.9% from the field which ranks 17th and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking 16th.
Kenrich Williams (knee) is out. Chet Holmgren (foot) is out for the season.
Cleveland Cavaliers
I feel like a broken record because I keep pointing out the Cavs aren’t on the same level as the Celtics or Bucks nor decidedly better than the next tier of five teams.
Granted they have the best home record (11-1) but of those 12 opponents, only three have winning records (Celtics, Hawks, Blazers) and two are .500 (76ers, Wolves).
Portland’s Damian Lillard and Philly’s James Harden/Tyrese Maxey were out. Their lone loss was to Minny and everyone knows I haven’t bought into the Hawks’ fool’s gold while the Celtics’ overtime win is the most impressive
Of their 13 road opponents, six had winning records when they played (Raptors x2, Celtics, Clippers, Kings, Bucks x2) plus the .500 Warriors. The only winning club they beat was Boston (again in OT).
Aside from resting their core versus Detroit, the Cavs have missed two starters for the same game just twice (Allen/Mitchell – Nov 13 and Allen/LeVert Nov. 20)
When I compare that to teams who’ve played harder schedules and had multiple starters out simultaneously that’s why I’m cautious about where to rank them.
Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.5 points per game ranking 18th while shooting 47.7% from the field and 37.4%, and the perimeter ranking ninth and eighth respectively.
Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 104.9 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 45.4% from the field and 34.5% from deep which ranks fourth and 10th respectively.
Dean Wade (shoulder), Dylan Windler (ankle), and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out indefinitely.

With the Cavs losing to the Kings on Friday they’ll be eager to get back into the win column, but the Thunder are no pushover and have the rest advantage. While I’d lean to Cleveland getting the win I’ll take the points because of how scrappy OKC is.
Also factoring is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be in line for a big night at the office because the Cavs don’t have a great defensive matchup for him.
