Tuesday, November 15th, the New York Knicks and Utah Jazz will meet for the first of two occasions this season. New York will host the second game on February 11th.
Both teams last played Sunday with the Knicks allowing the Thunder – a team that was struggling to score to put up 145 points (to 135) on them in the loss while the Jazz lost 98-105 to Joel Embiid — er– the 76ers.
Last season, the teams played twice with Utah winning both contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 54 of their 104 matches
New York Knicks
Many basketball purists feel the league would be at its best if the Knicks were relevant again. There are so many obstacles in the way starting with ownership because James Dolan has seldom allowed the management team to operate with autonomy.
In the last few seasons they’ve made dare I say better choices but for every step or two forward they can’t resist taking a step back. For example, while they’ve made decent draft choices they hired a coach who prefers to play his more tenured players.
I’m not sure you can blame Thibs for trying to put his highest I.Q. and skilled players on the court because he’s just as likely to get fired if he plays the youngsters and they lose because of inexperience.
It’s a catch-22.
Some suggest this iteration of the Knicks can be competitive and in the playoff mix. It feels like fool’s gold if we dive deeper into their success.
After the thrashing by the Thunder they fall just below .500 but let’s focus on the six wins… They beat the 76ers by two points — sounds great BUT Joel Embiid (you know the guy who just put up 59 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and 7 blocks on the Jazz?) and James Harden didn’t play.
All the other teams they beat have losing records. Including the 7-7 Sixers and 6-8 Wolves the cumulative record of the six teams they’ve defeated is 26-57!
The combo takeaway here is the Knicks are a mediocre club and Mitchell Robinson’s importance to the Knicks is far more necessary than it should be.
Utah Jazz
When the Jazz burst out of the gates and became one of the last teams to lose a game most thought Danny Ainge was just playing possum with other GMs to drive up the value of his other assets.
But they kept winning becoming the first club to register 10 victories. Analysts and pundits pointed to the gritty group Ainge assembled and how they were all playing with a chip on their shoulders, feeling like outcasts who hadn’t been given the opportunity to succeed.
Over the weekend they experienced a couple of firsts — they lost consecutive games and also failed to reach 100 points. Those losses were to the Wizards and 76ers who are both missing core contributors.
Compared to the Nuggets, Grizzlies (x2), and Hawks it seemed almost untenable these would be the clubs they lost to.
A few things can be at opposite ends of the spectrum and still be true. It’s highly likely scouting reports are being taken far more seriously than perhaps some teams did initially (expecting them to tank). It’s also possible this team happened to gel quickly and overachieved early.

Likewise, kudos to Lauri Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, and other Jazz players for taking offense at how they were perceived and hitting the lab to put the work in so their games could do their talking.
I doubt they’ll be sitting in fourth at season end, but the early success serves as a reminder to those franchises with superstar talents how important fit and team chemistry is. Just ask the Lakers and Nets!
