Saturday, March 13th the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder play for the second time this season with the Thunder winning the initial contest 101-90.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the squads with 68 victories in 134 meetings. Last season the Thunder won the single contest the clubs played.
New York Knicks
In their first game back from the All-Star break the Knicks began what will be a substantially more difficult schedule. Of the current seeded teams, the Knicks played those opponents 16 times in the first half and won only six times.
And those numbers might be skewed because two wins came versus the Hawks who just got on the ladder via a one-point win versus a decimated Raptors crew (who also beat the Knicks in the front half).
In the second half, the Knicks will play 21 playoff seeds plus another three matches against the Raptors (2) and Grizzlies who are both poised to leap onto the playoff ladder.
Their first test came on Thursday when they played the Bucks number two offense and tested their second-ranked defense. It wasn’t much of a fight as the Bucks destroyed the Knicks 134-101.
Austin Rivers missed Thursday’s match for personal reasons as did Derrick Rose for health and safety protocols. Mitchell Robinson underwent surgery on his left hand to repair a fracture with the hopes he’ll return shortly into the second half.
Oklahoma City Thunder
(Updated to add) Late Friday the Thunder announced they’ve traded Hamidou Diallo to Detroit for Svi Mykhailiuk and a 2027 second-round draft pick.
With Darius Bazley out nursing a sore shoulder Thunder head coach elected to start newly recalled rookie Aleksej Pokusevski in his place.
Likewise, Daigneault played Mose Brown who was also just back from the G-League bubble in place of Mike Muscala.
With the Thunder overachieving it’s likely the very young roster will lean toward their rookies and youngsters to accelerate their development and exposure. The unsaid part of the equation is hopefully tanking to nab one of those bottom three rungs in order to obtain a high draft pick.
Unfortunately, best-laid plans don’t always work as the Thunder went on to defeat the Mavericks. That’s been a common result this season as the franchise’s much-admired culture is proving how important that is to stay competitive.
Granted neither Luka Doncic nor Kristaps Porzingis played but the Thunder were missing Darius Bazley, Hamidou Diallo, and George Hill.
Pokusevski delivered 14 points, eight rebounds (five offensive), three dimes, and blocked two shots. While his shot is still a work in progress he did hit two 3-pointers. The 19-year old’s skill set is why the Thunder made the high risk-reward pick believing it will lean to the latter.
Brown scored eight points but it was his 12 rebounds (five offensive) that helped OKC win.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander produced his eighth 30 or more points game of the season with 32 to lead all scorers.
Bazley (shoulder) is out while George Hill (thumb) and Trevor Ariza (personal) remain out. UPDATED to add – a late addition to the injury report is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is out with a thigh contusion.
NBA Betting Trends:
