Saturday, January 2nd the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers will meet for the second time in this early campaign having opened their season against each other.
The Knicks hold the all-time record winning 92 of 182 contests. Last season, the clubs met three times with the Pacers taking two out of three games.
New York Knicks
Despite an absence of superstars Tom Thibodeau has his roster competing aggressively particularly on defense. Through five games they are 2-3 with the most recent game, a loss to the Raptors.
Julius Randle led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Randle left the match late after looking to come up a bit lame although he’s not on the injury report.
Kevin Knox also scored 16 while Elfrid Payton added 14 and Canadian RJ Barrett pitched in 12 as the other double-figure contributors.
A trio on the injury list could play including Knox (knee) Alek Burks (ankle) and Immanuel Quickley (hip). Dennis Smith Jr (quad), Frank Ntilikina (knee), Obi Toppin (leg), and Omari Spellman (knee) are all out.
Indiana Pacers
After suffering their first loss of the season the Pacers got right back on track pounding the Cleveland Cavaliers 119-99.
In the victory, the Pacers were particularly focused at game start and coming back from the halftime break winning both the first and third quarters by 11 and 14 points respectively.
Domantas Sabonis continues his sharp play leading his squad with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds plus seven assists. Should he replicate this type of performance versus the Knicks don’t be surprised if he wins Eastern Conference player of the year.
All five Pacers scored in double figures as Malcolm Brogdon (17), Victor Oladipo (16), Myles Turner (14) and Aaron Holiday (12) contributed to the balanced scoring.
While the starters are clicking finding scoring off the bench hasn’t been as simple particularly with the injuries the Pacers are dealing with. Doug Merdormott has been the best reserve and produced again with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Speaking of injuries, the Pacers were dealt a blow with news TJ Warren will have surgery to repair a small navicular stress fracture in his left foot. Timelines for when he’ll have the surgery and how long he’ll be out aren’t known.
Goga Bitadze (ankle) and Brian Bowen (groin) are both out indefinitely while Jeremy Lamb is slated to return in mid to late January from the torn ACL he suffered last year.
