Wednesday, November 16th finds the New York Knicks playing the Denver Nuggets for the first of two occasions this season. New York will host on March 18th.
The Knicks are playing a back-to-back set having won against the Jazz 118-111 on Tuesday while the Nuggets have been off since Sunday when they pounded the Bulls 126-103 wrapping up their four-game road trip 3-1.
The big news is Nikola Jokic has entered quarantine which could dramatically impact the outcome of this game and all the games he misses.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 51 of their 95 meetings. Last season the squads played twice with Denver winning both contests.
New York Knicks
In the victory versus the Jazz, six Knicks scored in double-figures with Jalen Brunson (25), Cam Reddish (19), and RJ Barrett (18) leading the way.
One of the secrets to the Jazz’ success has been the balanced scoring throughout the lineup both from starters and reserves with their bench leading the NBA in scoring. In this game, the Knicks kept it close (39-44) which was a key to their victory.
Statistically, the Knicks are a bit of an anomaly. They have pluses and minuses on both sides of the court and within both areas. Sort of like how they play — inconsistent.
They rank 11th in scoring with 114.9 points per game ranking 11th but are far less impressive in their efficiency, shooting 45.6% from the field (23rd) and 32.6% from the perimeter which ranks 28th besting only the Lakers and Hornets.
It’s the same situation on defense. Approximately a week ago the Knicks were among the top 10 for limiting opponent scoring but have slid to 24th allowing 116.4 points per game.
They fair better with opponent proficiency limiting them to 45.2% from the field (tied 8th) and 35.2% from distance (14th).
Mitchell Robinson (knee) is out indefinitely.
Denver Nuggets
As I predicted the Nuggets have begun to pull away from their counterparts to sit atop the Western Conference with the Blazers who technically are a half-game ahead because they’ve played an additional game.
That position will be challenged while Jokic is out recovering and could dramatically shift depending on how long he’s out. Denver has a baseball set in Dallas up next, but for now, they’ll try to maintain their unbeaten (4-0) record on their home floor.
The Nuggets continue to thrive offensively scoring 117.6 points per game (5th), and possess both the best field goal (50.4%), and perimeter efficiency (42.3%).
Defensively, Denver allows 114.8 points per game (20th) while opponents shoot 48.8% from the field (27th) and 35.6% from the perimeter (16th).
They are in a similar situation as the Celtics – strong offense, sub-par defense albeit Denver doesn’t have a RobWill sitting on their bench. However, they CAN be better which is highlighted by the fact they’re unbeaten in clutch time (4-0 with the game within five points).
It proves they’re capable of increasing the defensive intensity and for whatever reason aren’t bringing it for 48 minutes — perhaps psychologically knowing they don’t need to or that they’re capable of turning it on.
Aaron Gordon (illness) is questionable, Ish Smith (calf) is doubtful while Nikola Jokic (quarantine), and Bones Hyland (quarantine) are both out. Collin Gillespie (leg) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- New York is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against Denver.
- The Nuggets are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against an Atlantic Division opponent.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of New York’s last 5 games on the road.
- Denver is 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
Free New York Knicks vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Clearly, the Nuggets become far less attractive with Jokic out, and he could be out for a while. The Nuggets opened as nine-point favorites but after the injury update that dropped to half.
If the Knicks team who showed up in Utah travels to Denver I’d be all in on New York, but I’m not confident that will be the case. Moreover, a back-to-back is tough enough but the Utah-Denver B2B is about as brutal as it gets given the altitude with history on Denver’s side.
Last season the Nuggets were 2-6 without Jokic (but of course didn’t have Jamal Murray or Michael Porter Jr.). Is it too soon to rely on Murray stepping up? We’ll find out.
Even missing Jokic, I’m trusting in that historical advantage and Murray but if you’re inclined to lean the other way make sure to look around for the higher spread.
