Tuesday, November 30th finds the New York Knicks facing the Brooklyn Nets in their first meeting this season. Both teams last played on Saturday with the Nets losing to the Suns while the Knicks defeated the Hawks.
This match offers up bragging rights in New York as the Knicks faithful pull for the Bing Bong victory and Brooklyn fans hope for a bounce-back win after a lackluster loss by the Nets to the Suns.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Nets taking all three contests. The teams have played a total of 202 times with an even split of 101 victories each.
New York Knicks
While their cross-town rivals draw all the national attention the Knicks continue to be the Mecca’s true love although they’re struggling to rediscover the identity that made them the NBA’s Cinderella story of 2021.
They delivered on Saturday by taking down the team that knocked them out of the postseason ending the Hawks’ seven-game win streak.
Both teams were playing the second game of a back-to-back set and dealing with injuries. That should’ve favored the deeper Hawks but the Knicks played much closer to the style that helped them to gain a home-court seed last season relying on defense and grit.
Alek Burks led scoring with 23 points and got the tap to start with both Kemba Walker (rest/knee) and Derrick Rose (ankle) sidelined. Evan Fournier (20), RJ Barrett (15), and Obi Toppin (13) were the other double-figure scorers.
On top of Walker and Rose, Taj Gibson (groin) and Nerlens Noel (knee) were out Saturday, everyone other than Walker is questionable for Tuesday.
Brooklyn Nets
Despite topping the East, there are questions about how good the Nets are. Against the current playoff seeds, they are 5-6 and two of those victories were against the injury-depleted Cavaliers.
Moreover, of those five wins, the most impressive occurred in the second game of the season (76ers).
Missing Kyrie Irving isn’t ideal but the bigger question is what’s going on with James Harden. Recently he’s looked better but there are still matches like Saturday where he looks uncomfortable and makes post-game statements such as “I’m not sure when I should facilitate and when I should take over scoring.”
Huh? Surely you’ve been with the Nets long enough and know Kevin Durant well enough that this shouldn’t be something a former MVP making $43.8 million this season should be saying.
Although his stats are still robust they are down from last season and that’s curious given he’s not sharing the court with Irving. Perhaps most concerning is his field goal percentage is the lowest since his rookie season (40.6%)
Meanwhile, Durant just keeps rolling along playing like an MVP candidate never pushing his will on the game, and always making the most difficult shots look easy.
The perfect example of the above was tied to the loss to Phoenix, KD registered 39 points on 13 of 28 field goals and 4 of 7 from deep along with nine rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and a block.
Meanwhile, Harden delivered an odd triple-double featuring 12 points on 4 of 15 from the field (0 of 6 from deep) 13 rebounds, 14 assists, and seven turnovers.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The Knicks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
The Knicks have alternated losses and wins through their last eight matches and are on trend to lose this match. They cover the spread 55.5 percent of the time on the road and will have a good portion of Barclays’ attendees cheering them on.
The Nets cover the spread 30 percent of the time at home and push 10 percent of the time. Brooklyn hasn’t lost back-to-back games all year and all six losses were to teams with 59 percent and above winning percentages.
For the Knicks to change those dynamics they’ll need to play with grit, focus, and defensive intensity, and while I’m not convinced they can pull off the upset given how closely contested these meetings typically are I like the Knicks to keep it closer than 6.5 points.
