Friday, November 26th finds the New Orleans Pelicans visiting the Utah Jazz for the first of two consecutive meetings between the teams this season.
Both teams played on Wednesday with the Pelicans surprising the Wizards via a 127-102 beat down while the Jazz hung on for a 110-104 victory versus a shorthanded Thunder squad.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Jazz winning two of the three contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record with 41 wins in 65 matches versus the Pelicans.
New Orleans Pelicans
There is an undeniable thread that runs through the latter Anthony Davis Pelicans era and the current Zion Williamson Pelicans era.
Although the rosters have significantly turned over and coaches have exited through revolving doors yet the Pelicans’ identity remains the same.
The team never gets out to a strong start in the first 20 games. They’ll threaten to turn a mini winning streak into something early but never do that (if at all) until after the All-Star Break.
Then inevitably just as the pressure mounts with New Orleans needing to win to reach a benchmark they return to playing possum and losing in stretches to close the season.
That’s why it’s hard to buy how complete and utterly soundly the Pelicans thumped the Wizards (127-102) on Wednesday as anything other than an outlier.
It’s not that I don’t believe Jonas Valanciunas is a walking double-double like he was against the Wiz (21 points, 11 rebounds). Or that Brandon Ingram can play at an elite level like he did versus Washington – – 26 points, five rebounds (two on the offensive glass), three assists, and a steal.
Nor do I discount the defensive prowess of rookie Herb Jones or the potential of Nickeil Alexander-Walker (12 points, six rebounds, five assists, steal versus Wizards). ‘
I even like Josh Hart as a developing young veteran leader on this squad (16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a team-best plus +23 on Wednesday).
As the most recent head coach appointee, I think the franchise made the perfect selection in Willie Green, a former player/solid analytical coach all in one.
The problem is they play to their identity and that is putting all their eggs in the basket of a player who has played a total of 85 games in his three seasons as a pro — is once again out (and out of shape) and shocker there are whispers he might prefer greener pastures.
Considering what Ja Morant and even Darius Garland are doing in Memphis and Cleveland it’s hard to rationalize betting on this Pelicans team or Zion for that matter.
Utah Jazz
On the other end of the spectrum is Donovan Mitchell who is also his clubs cornerstone talent but has figured out how to impact winning, improve his teammates and most importantly take over in clutch time to secure the wins.
On Wednesday, Mitchell did precisely that needing to score six points in the final minute at the Paycom Center to cement the Jazz victory versus the scrappy Oklahoma City Thunder.
Never mind, he had a horrible shooting night — 6 of 16 from the field and 1 of 7 from deep for 13 points. What mattered is he delivered when he needed to and more poignantly was healthy and available to do it.
This franchise has it’s core and they also play to their identity as evidenced by the win versus OKC. Rudy Gobert posted a double-double (15 points, 17 rebounds, and oh yeah FIVE blocks). Bojan Bogdanovic (19), Mike Conley (18), Jordan Clarkson (20) all did their parts too.
If there is any caution to this tale, the Jazz seem almost disinterested in this “regular season stuff” only content to turn it on when they have to. It’s the one bad habit they’ll need to break if they don’t want it catching up to them down the road when the games do matter.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The Jazz are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
