*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Friday evening, December 30th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Saturday, December 31st.
New Orleans Pelicans
It’s been the week of 40-point scoring for the Pelicans as CJ McCollum dropped 42 on the 76ers including a franchise-high 11 deep balls. Zion Williamson followed up his 43-point Wednesday effort with 36 against the 76ers.
New Orleans sits atop the West tied with the Nuggets for first and have won five games in a row.
Offensively, the Pelicans rank third for scoring averaging 117.8 points per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 36.0% from the perimeter ranking fifth and 13th respectively.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 112.6 points per game, ranking 13th. New Orleans holds their opponents to 46.5% from the field ranking 10th and boasts the second-best perimeter ranking of 33.6%.
Larry Nance (neck) and Herbert Jones (quarantine) didn’t play Friday although the latter was likely due more to conditioning and of the two is more likely to play Saturday. Brandon Ingram (toe) and E.J. Liddell (knee) are out.
Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies did to Toronto what the Raptors (when they are playing to their identity), do to opponents and had the game in hand by the half.
The final box score looks closer than it really was because the Grizz took their foot off the gas, well all but Dillon Brooks who was taunting and screaming at Chris Boucher (his Oregon Duck teammate) which he must’ve spoken to the refs about pre-game because they let it go.
Case in point, Grizz won points in the paint (70 to 50), fast break scoring (21 to 18), and tied the Raptors for offensive rebounds with 17 but at the half, Memphis led PIP: 32-12, FBS 17-8 and were up 14 to 3 on the offensive glass.
It was the perfect game to get the Grizz dialed back into gear. Desmond Bane hit some shots but still looks far from his best as he shakes off the rust and other than Konchar was the only player struggling to keep up defensively which resulted in him fouling out.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.4 points per game ranking 10th overall. Memphis shoots 46.5% from the field ranking 20th, and 34.7% from the perimeter ranking 17th.
Since Jaren Jackson Jr. has returned the Grizzlies have made huge strides defensively owning the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.7%. They rank ninth for opponents scoring 111.5 points and 17th for opponent perimeter percentage 36.1%.
Santi Aldama tweaked his ankle on Thursday making him questionable for this match. Danny Green (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
This game takes on a whole new dynamic following Ja Morant’s -Nah, we fine – comment regarding his and the Grizzlies’ concerns of teams they need to be wary of.
It was a confident statement and fully on brand for this superstar and Grizzlies team that carries themselves with a different swagger arguably more than any of the young clubs.
And, up until now, they’ve been able to back it up. If there was advice for Morant it would likely be ‘Be CAREFUL what you wish for’ because that comment was the equivalent of asking every team to prove you wrong.
So on New Year’s Eve, instead of thinking about post-game party plans, the Pelicans will arrive thinking about how they can humble the Grizzlies!
