On Monday, November 28th the Minnesota Timberwolves and Washington Wizards facing each other for the first time this season. Minnesota will host the second match on February 16th.
Both clubs are completing a back-to-back that began on Sunday with the Timberwolves getting spanked 114-137 by the Warriors while the Wizards made a late rally but fell 121-130 to the Celtics.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Wizards winning both contests and holding a current five-game win streak versus the Wolves. The Wizards hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 37 of their 61 matches.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The five-game winning streak came to an abrupt end with consecutive losses over the weekend. There is no shame in losing to the defending champions who are on a hot shooting streak but coughing up a double-digit lead to the struggling Hornets is concerning.
Even the winning streak is suspect as a deeper dive reveals the Cavaliers, 76ers and Heat were all missing at least one of their stars and the other two wins came against other young teams either tanking (Magic) or figuring out their own chemistry (Pacers).
It feels like there is a power struggle afoot in Minny and they sure don’t give the impression they are squad we can feel confident will cement a playoff berth.
Minnesota is still trying to adapt to the defensive changes and that discrepancy shows in via the 114.7 opponent points allowed per game which ranks 22nd.
They perform better at limiting foes from the field to 45.0% which ranks fourth overall but have work to do on the perimeter allowing ‘ opponents to shoot 36.8% which ranking 23rd overall
Offensively, the Wolves score 114 points per game (13th), while shooting 48.1% from the field (7th) and 32.9% from the perimeter (26th).
Jordan McLaughlin (calf) and Jaden McDaniels (illness) are questionable for Monday. Taurean Prince (shoulder) is out indefinitely.
Washington Wizards
Ironically, the Wizards are in a similar boat to the Wolves in that they haven’t demonstrated consistency, their identity is a mystery, and they’ve benefitted from an easy early schedule and opponents dealing with injuries.
Offensively, the Wizards score 109.0 points per game which ranked 27th overall. Washington shoots 46.9% from the field and 33.8% from the perimeter ranking 14th and 20th respectively.
Defensively, the Wizards allow opponents to score 110.7 per game ranked 10th overall. As for opponent efficiency, the Wizards allow foes to shoot 45.0% from the field ranking fifth-best, and 37.0% from the perimeter ranking 24th.
Kyle Kuzma (back), Rui Hachimura (ankle), and Johnny Davis (groin) are all questionable for Monday. Delon Wright (hamstring) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wolves are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Wizards are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Wolves are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games on the road.
- The Wizards are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home.
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Quite frankly, both teams’ records feel augmented by luck rather than ability. Having an identity and strong culture is critical to success and while the Wolves’ ownership invested in getting better and Wizards doubled down on Bradley Beal neither feels like a bonafide playoff seed.
If the Gobert trade doesn’t deliver soon, there may be more moves coming and I have no idea what the Wizards are doing but if they were smart they’d deal some of the assets they have to try to get into the Wembanyama sweepstakes.
As for this match – toss a coin but with no strong feelings about either squad and a lower point spread, I’ll go with the team that has better talent.
