Two teams who are desperate for a win tip-off on Sunday, December 12th with the Minnesota Timberwolves playing the Portland Trail Blazers in the r first meeting between the clubs in the 2021-22 season. Both are on losing streaks of five and four games respectively.
The Blazers had three days off following their 94-104 loss to the Warriors on Wednesday while the Wolves lost 106-123 to the Cavaliers.
The Blazers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 87 wins in 123 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers winning two of the three contests.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The T-Wolves continue to teeter-totter up and down this season as they make a run and look like they’re turning a corner only to go back on a losing streak and look lottery-bound.
Preseason I thought head coach Chris Finch and the trio of Karl-Anthony Towns, De’Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards could propel this team upward to at least a play-in tournament seed but the Wolves consistent inconsistency has me wondering if I missed the boat completely.
On Friday, the Cavaliers’ length and athleticism proved to be too much for Minnesota to handle. Towns led the Wolves with 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, and three blocks.
Edwards had a rough shooting night especially from the perimeter (1 of 8) leading to his 13 points but also offered four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block.
Reserves Malik Beasley and Jaylen Nowell scored 15 and 10 points as the other double-figure contributors. The Cavaliers pounded the Wolves in the paint outscoring them by 20 points (62 to 42) and won the glass 47 to 40.
De’Angelo Russell (ankle) is the only player on the Wolves injury report and is listed as questionable to play on Sunday.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers reported Damian Lillard had a cortisone shot to his abdomen to help with the tendinitis and pain he’s been living with. The team reported he could return as early as this game and as of posting, he was upgraded to questionable.
While the match Wednesday had everyone watching to see if Stephen Curry could score enough 3-pointers to tie or break the record the shorthanded Blazers did their best to try to steal a win.
Kudos to the shorthanded Blazers making this match competitive. Norman Powell tried his best but drew extra defensive attention. That led to an inefficient shooting night (8 of 23 FG and 1 of 7 from deep) but he scored 23 points thanks to 9 of 11 from the charity stripe.
Powell got assistance from Jusuf Nurkic who registered a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds plus six assists.
Nassir Little returned from missing four games due to a calf injury and made an immediate contribution with 18 points and six rebounds. Dennis Smith Jr. and Ben McLemore each scored 12 points as the other double-figure contributors.
As noted Lillard may return on Sunday with Anfernee Simons (ankle), and Little (calf) upgraded to probable while Cody Zeller (quad) was downgraded to out. CJ McCollum (lung) is out indefinitely.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The only definite about this game is one losing streak is over. The last time Lillard returned from missing action (a single game that time) he scored 24 points and shot an inefficient 3 of 6 from deep and 10 of 21 from the field.
The question is whether four days off will leave him rusty or be (no pun intended) just what the doctor ordered.
