You wouldn’t be blamed if you glossed over the Saturday afternoon match-up in Phoenix. It features the two bottom-ranked teams in an already uninspiring Western Conference. There are glimpses of young talent to be had, but make no mistake: If you found yourself in the Greater Phoenix Area, you could get a reasonable price off a scalper for this one.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves have a frustrating core – just ask Jimmy Butler if you don’t believe me. Maybe Butler couldn’t reconcile the taskmastering of head coach Tom Thibodeau with the sleepy, disengaged personas of (supposed) franchise cornerstones Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. Butler demanded out and he did everything – including acting like a petulant child – to get it.

This leaves the current edition of the T’wolves: talented, but flawed. Perhaps deeply flawed. On a good night, Towns can look like a young Kevin Garnett – another name that still draws a lot of water in the Twin Cities. On a good night, Wiggins can showcase his plus-plus athleticism and the utter ease with which he can play this game well.
But most of the time, it seems like the two stars are going through the motions to collect a paycheck, to the team’s detriment. Minnesota is a game under .500 and out of the playoff picture in a logjammed Western Conference.

With so many mediocre squads (Read: Not the Golden State Warriors) clustered together, the Wolves are certainly not out of it. But short of a major change in philosophy, you wouldn’t foresee the Timberwolves making a long run with spring basketball.
Minny should have enough to emerge victorious against the awful Suns, but that’s not a true measuring stick for what it is up against the rest of the way in 2018-19.
Phoenix Suns
Last game, the lowly Suns pulled an upset win over the Dallas Mavericks, thanks to shooter T.J. Warren’s 30 points in the effort. There are random spasms of talent on this club. Rookie big man Deandre Ayton, despite people criticizing some aspects of his game, also shows a lot of potential to be an impact player. He could combine with entrenched star Devin Booker (if the latter can prove he can stay healthy) for a potent duo.
Apart from the Bahamaian rookie, the Suns enjoy the dead-eye shooting of Warren. Phoenix also brought Trevor Ariza aboard in the offseason, but that veteran is already requesting a trade, possibly to the L.A. Lakers.

Apart from that, it’s a nightmare for Arizonan pro basketball at the moment. There is consternation about the team’s dated arena, mixed messages from Suns owner Robert Sarver, and no fans for a team that’s the worst in the NBA. Does it get worse before it gets better?

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Towns will probably show Ayton a thing or two in the low post, though these two players’ games are eerily similar – hesitant, with passion and aggressiveness that comes in spurts.
Minnesota is a more well-developed team than Phoenix is, even sans Butler, and the function of that should be a road win. It likely won’t be pretty and it might not be worth tuning in for, but the Wolves should at least claw their way back to a .500 record over the weekend.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Timberwolves -9.0
The Suns actually looked good against the Mavs, so this isn’t a foregone conclusion, but I still think Minnesota is in the driver’s seat to get this home win in what is surely a welcome change in weather for the Minnesotans around Christmas time.
