Thursday, January 13th finds the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Memphis Grizzlies for the third time this season. Memphis won 125-118 in overtime on November 8th while the Wolves won 138-95 on November 20th. The teams will play once more on February 24th in Minnesota.
Both teams played on Tuesday with the Wolves losing a heartbreaker 125-128 to the Pelicans while the Grizzlies delivered a statement 116-108 win versus the Warriors.
Minnesota Timberwolves
My preseason dark horse play-in team continues to keep me invested with their effort. Although they vacillate between streaks of winning and losing they’ve navigated injury and protocols far better than many of the other clubs that were projected to make a leap this season.
The Kings, Pelicans, and Blazers were all earmarked in the West either as teams expecting to rise or be cemented as playoff seeds but of that group the Wolves have performed far more consistently and dealt with adversity the best.
The trio of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell are developing chemistry and it’s equating to wins for the club. Their win streak ceased with the loss to the Pels but they’ve looked solid of late.
Although head coach Chris Finch is noted as an offensive savant arguably the biggest achievement his Wolves made this season is their defensive improvement since they rank an impressive eighth on that side of the court. Considering they ranked 28th in 2020-21 they deserve recognition for that dramatic shift.
Minnesota has played a relatively difficult schedule with more than half their matches against teams with records above .500 and has also dealt with ample injuries and players being felled by health and safety protocols.
McKinley Wright IV / Leandro Bolmaro (health and safety protocols), and Jaylen Nowell (ankle) are all questionable for Thursday.
Memphis Grizzlies
Ja Morant began the week having won back-to-back Western Conference Player of the Week awards and the Grizzlies continued to ride the wave winning nine games in a row — a franchise high.
Defeating the Warriors to improve the win streak to ten games in a row served as a statement – the Grizzlies are FOR REAL. Regardless of who is in or out of the lineup for Memphis, this team is showcasing to the other elite clubs how impactful confidence and belief in yourself is.
It’s fair to point to teams missing star players and note how that impacts games and offers leeway in losses but perhaps the lesson to be taken from what the Grizzlies are doing is that they play a system and buy into what coach Taylor Jenkins is preaching.
They’ve accomplished what most of the elite clubs haven’t which is winning regardless of who suits up – for that factor alone it feels like Jenkins should be the leading candidate to win Coach of the Year.
Granted, Ja Morant is creating a case for both Most Improved and MVP especially if the Grizzlies remain a home court seed. Similarly, Desmond Bane has opened eyes to how much he’s grown in just his second season.
One bit of bad news is that the brutal ankle sprain suffered by Dillon Brooks will keep him off the hardwood for three to five weeks. It’s not a coincidence the Grizzlies who began the season struggling defensively made a rapid ascent up the defensive ratings with his return so let’s keep track of whether his absence results in a dip defensively.
Steven Adams is questionable Yves Pons is and Dillon Brooks (ankle) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 8-2 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Grizzlies are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Memphis needs to navigate opponents being motivated to end the win streak and also remember not to buy into their own hype and forget what got them in there.
I’m sticking with the Grizz until they lose although I think the Wolves will push them make it harder for Memphis to cover the spread
