Minnesota’s two-game winning streak predictably came to an end on Friday night in Golden State when the Warriors accepted a fourth quarter deficit and proceeded to blow the doors off the Wolves at Oracle.
The T-Wolves will be in Portland on Sunday evening before traveling to Los Angeles for this one with the Clips on the second night of a back-to-back.
There haven’t been many cupcakes on the Wolves’ early season schedule. They have already played San Antonio, Indiana, Toronto, Milwaukee, the Lakers, Utah and Golden State, plus the Blazers up next.
Those last seven opponents, including Portland, have been the last seven opponents. They’ll play the Lakers again two days after this game, in LA.
So, all in all, a 4–5 record isn’t so discouraging, considering the circumstances and the rough schedule out of the gates. If Minnesota can keep treading water, it will get better, unless Jimmy Butler is on his way out the door. It sort of feels like a trade is inevitable with all the chatter, though it hasn’t happened yet. It may be just too difficult to get a deal done.
Los Angeles Clippers
Going into Sunday, the Clippers are only a game better than Minnesota but the narrative around them is just so much more positive.
In the first full year without either Chris Paul or Blake Griffin since 2009, the Clippers seem to be gelling as a unit, this time around emphasizing depth over star power.
Doc Rivers’ starting backcourt is about as offensively challenged as any in the league, with Pat Beverley and Avery Bradley, neither of whom are serviceable shooters in today’s NBA.
That leaves a lot of the first-unit scoring up to Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari, who are so far getting it done. Boban Marajovic made the start in LA’s last game against Orlando. He provides some efficient scoring down low.
Of course, you can afford to go heavy on the defense in the starting unit when Lou Williams is coming off the bench. He exploded in the fourth quarter of the Clippers’ 25-point win over the Magic on Friday night and Rivers called him a “professional scorer” after the game.
Williams leads a gritty Clipper second team that feels like it can beat anybody else’s right now. Because of that, the Clips look like a playoff team so far.
