Tuesday, December 21st, finds the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Dallas Mavericks in the second game of a home and home series with the Wolves winning 111-105 on Sunday.
The clubs will play twice more this season once again with the games in close proximity playing in Dallas on March 21st and in Minnesota on March 25th.
Minnesota Timberwolves
After losing five games in a row the Wolves are on a four-game winning streak. Two of those wins came without the services of sophomore Anthony Edwards who missed his first games as a pro locked in quarantine.
During this stretch, the Wolves have focused on improving defensively and are taking steps in that direction.
The wins haven’t been of the statement variety despite coming against the Blazers, Nuggets, Lakers, and Mavericks especially because each team was missing a core contributor(s).
The Wolves aren’t shedding any tears over their opponent woes as they are also dealing with injuries and COVID themselves.
To wit, Edwards, Josh Okogie, and Taurean Prince gained company Monday as it was learned Patrick Beverley and Jarred Vanderbilt would join them in health and safety protocols.
That’s going to put a ton of pressure on Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell to carry the load but they fared well in that department Sunday in the victory versus the Mavericks.
KAT led the way with 24 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while Russell scored 22. Jaylen Nowell made up some of the lost offensive production from Edwards with 16 points.
Malik Beasley (13), Jaden McDaniels (12), and Patrick Beverley (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Dallas Mavericks
Prior to the home and home series, the Mavericks were struggling having lost 10 of their last 15 matches. Granted Luka Doncic didn’t participate in seven of those games but Dallas was 3-5 with him and 2-5 without him so the issues aren’t solely tied to having their star.
The offense has suffered the most with Dallas recording the 22nd ranked offense through the 15 games prior to this Minnesota series. Although their defense ranks 10th in the same period they faced seven top 10 offenses in that period but were 2-5 against them.
Kristaps Porzingis was lost in the second half with foot soreness scoring 13 points before exiting. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way with 28 points while Dorian Finney-Smith scored 23. Jalen Brunson delivered a double-double of 18 points and 11 assists.
The injury report lists Frank Ntilikina (illness) as probable and Porzingis (foot) questionable. Health and safety protocols impact the trio of Reggie Bullock, Maxi Kleber, and Josh Green.
Doncic (ankle), Willie Cauley-Stein (personal reasons), and Eugene Omoruyi (foot) are all cited as out indefinitely but there are whispers Luka will play.

Both teams will be shorthanded but Doncic might return and if he does something he’ll need to do is raise his defensive play. During his absence, the Mavericks improved defensively a factor that can be tied back to Dallas holding opponents to 9.3 fewer points when he sits.
Maybe it’s my preseason dark horse pick bias but I’m going with the Wolves extending their win streak.
