Monday, February 1st finds the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers finishing a back-to-back home and home set. The Wolves won game one Sunday 109-104.
The Cavaliers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 37 wins in 60 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with each team winning one of the contests.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The one player who many NBA fans want to witness something positive happen for is Karl-Anthony Towns. While everyone has been affected by the pandemic losing seven family members including his mother was heartbreaking.
Two games into the season he dislocated the wrist he’d previously broken and missed six consecutive games as well as the second game of a back-to-back set.
He played once more and then got the bad news he tested positive for COVID-19 and has missed the last eight games but could return tonight.
Hopefully, for the rest of this year, he reaps the reward end of the spectrum because KAT has had more than his fair share of sadness, bad luck, and negatively to last a lifetime.
While the Wolves shot well from the perimeter (40% on 16 of 40) they allowed the Cavaliers to outscore them by 30 points in the paint (72-42) and will need to address that issue which would definitely be helped if KAT can play.
Malik Beasley and Anthony Edwards each scored 23 points to lead scoring while D’Angelo Russell (19) and Jaylen Nowell (13) were the other double-figure scorers.
Towns and Juan Hernangomez have each missed eight games in the NBA health and safety protocols for COVID-19. They’ve been upgraded to a game-time decision.
Naz Reid (wrist) is questionable to play Monday. Jarrett Culver missed the last three games with an ankle injury and is expected to remain out until approximately February 10th.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Although the Cavaliers battled to the wire and Andre Drummond was brilliant in delivering a 25 point, 22 rebound double-double the game was lost because they didn’t protect the ball. To wit, Cleveland’s 19 turnovers equated to 29 easy points for Minny.
Darius Garland (17), Collin Sexton (16), Isaac Okoro (13), and Jarrett Allen (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Offense continues to be an issue for the Cavs as they rank 29th in the league (103.9). Fortunately, their eighth ranked defense (108.3) is keeping them in games but they need to find a better balance.
Lamar Stevens (abdomen) is a game-time decision. Kevin Love won’t play Monday as he rehabs a right calf strain and is expected back in early February.
Matthew Dellavedova remains out due to a concussion with a presumed return date of mid-February
NBA Betting Trends:
- Wolves are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Total has been over in 6 of Cavaliers last 8 games.
- Cavaliers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
While it would be easy to say take all the Wolves stats with a grain of salt that’s easier said than done. Minnesota ranks 30th for offense and net rating as well as 26th defensively.
Although KAT will help, it’s unfair to place that much pressure on one players’ shoulders.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Wolves + 4.5
While it takes an entire team to win, the Cavs are proving one or two key additions can catapult your success trajectory.
The “game-time decision” injury reports are annoying because it’s always a player who could dramatically impact the outcome, Towns in the perfect example of this.
Not to put too fine a point on it but if Towns plays I think Minny wins and if he doesn’t they lose. Since he deserves some good luck for a change I’m going to bet he plays.
