Sunday, November 13th the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers meet for the first of two matchups this season. Minny will host the second meeting on January 14th.
Both teams played Friday with the Timberwolves losing 103-114 versus the Grizzlies while the Cavaliers extended their current losing streak to three in a row after the 101-106 loss to the Warriors.
Last season, the squads played twice with the teams splitting the two contests. The Cavaliers hold the all-time record having bested the Timberwolves in 39 of their 63 matches.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Chris Finch is trying to get this team rolling and put them in a place to succeed with their new center but Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert simply haven’t figured out how to co-exist yet.
KAT was thrilled by this move so he wouldn’t have to bang with centers but it exposes him at power forward on the defensive end. And, Anthony Edwards is also unhappy with the floor spacing because Gobert is clogging the lanes limiting his options.
Minny has lost six of seven but this last defeat highlights the issue that has always been part and parcel of the Wolves teams and Towns — they lack grit.
They exited the playoffs last season stating they’d be back with KAT making proclamations these two teams were the future of the NBA (Grizzlies/Wolves). So what did they do in the first meeting since that playoff oust? — Lost the game and scored only 103 points!!
If there is another takeaway from the recent loss perhaps it’s Minny traded away their grit (Jarred Vanderbilt/Patrick Beverley) to get Gobert!
The Wolves allow 115.6 points per game ranking tied for 22nd while they are effectively holding opponents to 44.9 percent from the field which ranks seventh best but have work to do on the perimeter allowing opponents to shoot 36.6 percent ranking 23rd.
In contrast, Minnesota scores 113.2 points per game ranking 13th overall. The Wolves rank 10th shooting 47.5 percent from the field but struggle mightily from the perimeter shooting 32.6 percent which ranks 26th.
Naz Reid (illness) is questionable for Sunday.
Cleveland Cavaliers
I warned not to get too high on the Cavaliers or jump on this title bandwagon. Although I do think the Cavs will be right in the mix for an East home-court seed I wasn’t buying the early championship hype because their schedule has been light.
They needed overtime to beat the Celtics (in both games) and lost to the only other winning teams they faced (Raptors, Clippers).
Their schedule is still relatively soft through to game 20 but offers several sub .500 teams that are better than their records like the Kings and Warriors.
We’ll see how they fare as they face more of those squads to close this quarter (Wolves today and Heat) plus the upper-tier teams like the Bucks (twice) and Hawks.
Defensively, the Cavaliers allow 107.3 points per game which rank seventh. Cleveland’s opponents shoot 45.8 percent from the field ranking 11th and 36.5 percent from the perimeter which ranks 20th.
On the offensive side of the ball, Cleveland is averaging 115.3 points per game which ranks 10th although it was just a week ago when they sat in the top three.
The Cavs are still flourishing in their proficiency shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep placing them ninth and third-ranked respectively.
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Timberwolves are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Cavaliers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Minnesota’s last 8 games.
- Cleveland is 8-3 SU in their last 11 games.
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
The addition of Gobert hasn’t paid the defensive dividends the T-Wolves desired (at least not yet) and his presence seems to have completely thrown off the offense.
Add in the off-court barbs being tossed about and the body language on the court and it sure feels like this is a full-blown power struggle between KAT and Ant Man. The question is whether Chris Finch can get his team back on track before the situation gets worse.
With the Cavs on a three-game losing streak, they’ll be amped to get back in the win column which isn’t great news for the Wolves because Cleveland DOES have flow on both sides of the hardwood, and they have the size to deal with the Minny Towers.
I don’t have faith in the Wolves especially when they couldn’t channel the passion needed to take down the team who ousted them from the 2022 playoffs. If they weren’t up for that – why would the Cavs illicit that passion?
