Friday, December 3rd finds the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Brooklyn Nets in their first meeting this season. Minnesota last played Wednesday in Washington in a 107-115 loss to the Wizards.
This is the front side of a back-to-back set for the Nets who will play the Bulls tomorrow, Brooklyn last played on Tuesday in a close 112-110 win over the Knicks.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Nets taking all both contests. The teams have played a total of 61 times with the Wolves holding the advantage winning on 35 occasions.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves have been rolling and looked poised to pull out another victory in Washington but fell for just the second time in their last nine matches.
Things looked dire at the game end when Karl Anthony-Towns went up for a dunk. Towns hung onto the rim and his momentum pulled him off causing him to land hard on the court and clutch his back.
As it turns out it was more his tailbone that was injured and while it looked serious at the time KAT said post-game he felt better than he thought he would. That said, after a night of rest, those types of injuries can flare up, and subsequently he’s listed as questionable for Friday.
In the loss, Towns registered a double-double of 34 points and 10 rebounds (five on the offensive glass) prior to getting injured. Anthony Edwards pitched in 25 points, three rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.
Naz Reid offered 13 points off the bench while D’Angelo Russell was one assist shy of a double-double (10 points, nine assists).
The Wolves have a myriad of injuries beyond KAT as the team deals with a bout of the flu. Jarred Vanderbilt just returned from having it for the Wizards match while Anthony Edwards has it but is listed as probable.
Jaylen Nowell (illness) and Jaden McDaniels (illness) which is presumably also the flu are questionable. Patrick Beverley (adductor strain) missed his fourth game and remains out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
There is a common denominator occurring in recent matches for the Nets with opposing coaches complaining about foul calls and free throw trips. While the season began with James Harden constantly complaining it’s interesting he suddenly is quiet as a church mouse. Why?
Because he’s once again getting those calls and the refs aren’t giving them to the opposing teams. I’ve poured over game film and to be fair, they are playing better defense— but– they’re also getting away with defending differently than their opposition.
In the victory versus the Knicks, the Nets took 25 free throws to 12 for New York with Kevin Durant (nine) and James Harden (10) each almost taking more than the entire Knicks team.
Durant registered 27 points, nine assists, and five rebounds while Harden flirted with a triple-double posting 34 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists plus three steals and five turnovers.
Rookie Cam Thomas scored 12 points off the bench while Patty Mills (10) was the only other double-figure scorer.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Timberwolves are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Timberwolves are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
- The Nets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Wolves are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Much will depend on who can play for the Wolves as having Towns will pose issues for the Nets who like many clubs struggle when they face size. Likewise, the Wolves will have issues defensively with the two Nets stars Durant and Harden.
Given the uncertainty of Towns and the flu bug running rampant in the Wolves roster, I’m leaning to the Nets winning and covering.
