Friday January 5 finds the Minnesota Timberwolves arriving at the Garden to play the Boston Celtics. The Timberwolves lost their last game by a single point to the Nets and the rested Celtics easily handled the Cavaliers who were playing on consecutive nights.
Last season the Celtics swept the two game series. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves 34 of 54 matches.
For as much as the Timberwolves showcase a top tier team they still demonstrate areas of their game which require extra attention. A perfect example was the loss to the Nets. While the Timberwolves boast the leagues fifth ranked offense they still struggle in clutch situations and half court offense.
The other obvious area is the Wolves defense which still inexplicably resembles anything but a Tom Thibodeau defense. To wit, the Wolves rank 23rd of 30 teams defensively. Particularly concerning is the Wolves rank dead last for opponent field goal percent, allowing teams to shoot 47.9 percent.
For the Wolves to go far this season they’ll need to address their defensive issues first and foremost.
Jeff Teague’s grade one MCL strain is expected to keep him out for two to four weeks. The other player injured is rookie Justin Patton who should be nearing a return after suffering a broken bone in his foot.
Following a segment of the schedule where the Celtics went 5-6 the squad has seemingly got back on track winning four in a row.
The most recent win came versus the team most expect to come out of the Eastern Conference (‘Cleveland).
Although the Cavaliers were playing on a back-to-back the Celtics highlighted how porous the Cavaliers defense is with six different players producing double digit efforts. Terry Rozier led the way with 20 points and extended his double digit scoring to the five consecutive games.
Kyrie Irving is the definitive star of the team leading the Celtics in scoring (24.4). Al Horford leads the team in rebounding (7.9), however the fact he is the top assist man is very surprising (5.2 per game).
Aron Baynes tweaked his ankle in the game versus the Cavaliers, but is expected to play Friday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Wolves are 4-6 ATS in their last 10 head to head contests
- Celtics are 6-4 in last 10 head to head meetings.
- Over Under is 6-3-1 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction: Take the Wolves and the points
Generally I’d lean toward the Celtics winning this game, but the Wolves are resilient and seldom don’t rebound following a loss. The Wolves lost two in a row three times this season, but haven’t lost back-to-back games since November 20th.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Wolves +4
Although the Celtics may be the eventual winners, this should be a close game, so take the points and the Wolves
NBA Free Score Prediction: Wolves 107 – Celtics 105
