Thursday, December 30th finds the Magic hosting the Milwaukee Bucks for the first of two consecutive games in Orlando. The teams played twice prior in Milwaukee with the Bucks winning both games on November 20th (117-108) and 22nd (123-92).
Milwaukee also won (127-110) Tuesday so will be seeking the season sweep.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Bucks sweeping the season series and holding a current nine-game winning streak versus Orlando dating back to November 2019. The Bucks hold the slim edge in the all-time record with 66 wins in 119 matches versus the Magic.
Milwaukee Bucks
Once again the Bucks are close to full health with only Brook Lopez sidelined as he heals from his back surgery. The last time the Bucks were in this position they went on a run nearly catching Brooklyn.
Considering each of the Nets, Bulls, Heat, and Cavaliers are dealing with health and safety protocols or injuries of their own this could be the window when the Bucks overtake all of them to claim the top seed.
Milwaukee arrives at this game having won four games in a row. Head coach Mike Budenholzer was able to go deep into his reserve group with Jrue Holiday the only starter to play more than 30 minutes (34) via his 18 points, 10 assists double-double effort.
Giannis Antetokounmopo registered 28 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Khris Middleton offered 21 points. Bobby Portis returned from protocols with a bang scoring 19 points and hitting all five of his 3-point attempts.
Five Bucks scored in double-digits including Pat Connaughton with 10 off the bench.
Orlando Magic
Although many thought the Magic got a steal in the draft when the Raptors passed on Jalen Suggs in favor of Scottie Barnes in hindsight the bigger takeaway may be whether the Thunder and Warriors slept on Franz Wagner.
In truth, Josh Giddey is the perfect backcourt companion to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander so the Warriors are the team you have to wonder about missing out on Wagner albeit Jonathan Kuminga is a raw talent who could have a high upside (or draw great trade value).
In the loss to the Bucks, Wagner put on an impressive show scoring 38 points all via an efficient 12 of 20 from the field, 10 of 10 from the line, and 4 of 8 from deep. The rookie added seven rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.
Wendell Carter Jr. produced a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Gary Harris scored 13 as the only other double-figure scorer.
In direct contrast to the Bucks who have just one name on their injury list, the Magic list of walking wounded is extensive. Five players could exit protocols and play on Thursday including Terrence Ross, Mo Bamba, Chuma Okeke, Hassani Gravett, and Mychal Mulder.
Cole Anthony (ankle) was downgraded to out on Thursday. Jalen Suggs (thumb), Jonathan Isaacs (knee), Markelle Fultz (knee), Michael Carter-Williams (knee), and E’Twaun Moore (knee) are out indefinitely.

When trap games occur it’s typically because another team took their opponent for granted, got too cute showing off their greater talent, or are fatigued coming back from a long trip.
The Bucks aren’t that type of team and aren’t felled by the other circumstances so this should be another easy victory with the only uncertainty being whether the reserve unit can cover the spread.
