Wednesday, November 9th, the Milwaukee Bucks and OKC Thunder finish their season series having just played Saturday when the Bucks won 108-94.
Both teams played on Monday with the Thunder losing 103-109 to the Pistons while the Hawks finally handed the Bucks their first loss of the season (98-117) after previously becoming the fifth check mark of their win streak.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Bucks sweeping the regular-season series. The Bucks hold the all-time record with 74 wins in 147 matches versus the Thunder.
Milwaukee Bucks
It had to happen eventually and on Monday the Bucks might’ve gotten caught by an old trap for teams — letting your guard down upon learning your opponent’s star is out injured.
That’s what happened with the Hawks star Trae Young who was sidelined with shin pain but his teammates looked dare I say more cohesive as a team without Young on the court.
Giannis Antetokounmpo played despite the possibility he wouldn’t due to knee soreness and offered up 25 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. But the combination of the Bucks’ lowest point tally (98) combined with the highest turnovers (19) this season equated to their first loss.
The Bucks allow the fewest opponent points (102.7) per game and also hold opponents to the lowest field goal percentage (42.8%.).
Milwaukee added a new tweak to their defense focusing on guarding the perimeter – – something they avoided in their championship season and 2021-22 campaign
With a renewed focus and strategy they’re seeing dividends as they’ve moved up to the seventh-best mark to this point in the season with opponents shooting a mere 33.4 percent.
As noted previously in this column, the Bucks are trailing their typical offensive standards but await two core assets (Khris Middleton, Pat Connaughton) who’ll bolster that production.
In the interim, they score 111.4 points per game ranking 19th in the NBA, and are shooting 44.9 percent from the field (25th) and 34.1% from the perimeter (21st).
Giannis Antetokounmpo (knee) is probable while Jrue Holiday (ankle) is doubtful for Wednesday. AJ Green (nose), Pat Connaughton (calf), and Khris Middleton (wrist) are out indefinitely. Joe Ingles’ (ACL) earliest return date is mid-January.
OKC Thunder
The second ‘Tanker Bowl’ of Monday night featured two clubs who actually play defense (the Rockets and Magic left their defensive shoes at home).
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was impressive yet again leading his Thunder with 33 points, seven rebounds, five assists, a steal, and FOUR blocks but didn’t have enough offensive support to pull off the win.
The two vets on the club Mike Muscala and Kenrich Williams offered 11 points each in a reserve role and were the only other Thunder players to register double-digit scoring.
In fact, evidence the Thunder is committed to development (er– tanking — cough) was the fact that despite Muscala and Williams being two of the more efficient shooters their minutes were massaged to allow the youngsters to play and get up shots.
Defensively, the Thunder allows 111.8 points per game (14th) while holding opponents to 46 percent from the field (12th) and 34.7 percent from the perimeter (12th).
OKC’s issue remains on the offensive side of the hardwood where SGA searches nightly for a Robin to aid his Batman. They are scoring 109.7 points per game which ranks 23rd while shooting 44.1% from the field (28th) and an anemic 29.3% from the perimeter (29th).
Aleksej Pokusevski (shoulder) is questionable for Wednesday. Chet Holmgren (foot) is out for the season following surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture.

Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. OKC Thunder NBA Prediction:
Let’s face it the Thunder drew the short straw having to play a riled-up Bucks squad who just lost their first game of the season.
They might get a minor advantage if Holiday sits since he’d be shadowing SGA but OKC will need more than a minor advantage to pull off the upset and hand the Bucks a second consecutive loss.
The 6.5 spread is sort of slight given the teams but presumably, it’s impacted by the potential for Holiday sitting and the “probable” for Giannis indicating a possibility he could sit. Unless that changes to definitely out, take the Bucks to cover.
