Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals between the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets is set for Monday, June 7th at 7:30 p.m. Game 1 was won by the Nets (115-107).
It took all of 45 seconds for the series to experience a dramatic shift when James Harden reinjured his hamstring leaving the match. In spite of losing one of their Big 3, the Nets went on to easily take Game 1.
However, the implications of not having Harden for the series should favor the Bucks having an advantage over the course of seven games. Milwaukee needs to win Game 2 in order to gain that edge with specific areas to improve upon from the opener.
Although the score shows an eight-point differential the majority of the match wasn’t that close. Initially, the Bucks brought energy, crashed the glass, and attacked the paint which resulted in them winning the first quarter (32-30).
Yet, in the middle quarters, it was the Nets who played with energy and were easily the more aggressive team building a double-digit lead.
Whether the loss of Harden threw off the Bucks is unclear but they failed to look remotely close to the squad who easily dispensed of the Heat in Round 1.
Giannis Antetokounmpo registered a double-double of 34 points and 11 rebounds but it never felt like he was the superstar controlling the game.
Jrue Holiday began the match guarding Harden, but shifted onto Kyrie Irving after the injury. Holiday struggled shooting 7 of 19 to collect 17 points adding nine rebounds, and six assists.
Khris Middleton also collected a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds while Brook Lopez scored 19 points. Mike Budenholtzer elected to start PJ Tucker tasking him to guard Kevin Durant.
A scan of the box score is deceiving given the offensive production of the Bucks but they simply seemed mired in quicksand for the majority of the match. There are easy tweaks that can be made for Milwaukee to capitalize on its advantages moving forward.
With arguably the most important member of the Nets Big 3 gone the other two stepped up to deliver. Kevin Durant led the way with a double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds plus three assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Kyrie Irving collected 25 points shooting well from everywhere but the perimeter (3 of 11). Yet it was the surprise play of Blake Griffin that stole the show in Game 1.
Griffin brought energy and aggression to the court that I was expecting to witness from the Bucks. In a performance reminiscent of his All-Star days Griffin delivered a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds (the latter a career playoff-high). He repeatedly dove on the floor for loose balls, crashed the glass, and even played instigator for the Nets.
Late season addition, Mike James witnessed increased playing time due to Harden’s injury and responded with 12 points off the bench.
Harden has definitely been ruled out for Game 2.

Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Milwaukee dominated the glass and the paint winning both with a 58 to 47 rebound advantage and 72 to 48 paint scoring edge. Those two factors weren’t enough to provide a greater effect on the game score.
Rather, the perimeter became the overwhelming difference between the clubs as Brooklyn shot 37.5 percent (15 of 40) for 45 points while the Bucks shot 20 percent (6 of 30) for 18 points or a 27 point differential.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bucks +1.5
Although it’s early in the series Milwaukee is in close to a must-win situation so they can return home with the series even. Brooklyn can play more relaxed in Game 2 but expect the Bucks to bring a more intense effort defensively.
