Wednesday, January 5th, finds the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers facing each other for the first time this season and will play once more in Miami on January 19th.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Heat losing 108-115 to the Warriors while the Blazers defeated the Hawks 136-131.
Last season, the teams played twice with each team winning on the road. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Heat in 41 of their 65 matches.
Miami Heat
Poor Jimmy Butler can’t seem to catch any health luck this season. After falling and injuring his tailbone which caused him to miss four games in his return he fell awkwardly again re-injuring the tailbone leading to another eight-game absence.
Back for the past five games at a time with the Heat severely shorthanded he suffered yet another injury tweaking his ankle at the end of the third quarter versus the Warriors and required help off the court. Prior to leaving he offered 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Kyle Lowry did his best to keep the Heat close serving up a double-double of 16 points and 11 assists plus six rebounds but fought foul trouble the entire game playing with five fouls from the end of the third quarter on.
Caleb Martin (19), Tyler Herro (18), and Kyle Guy (14) were the other double-figure scorers while Omer Yurtseven grabbed 17 rebounds.
The Heat is absolutely decimated by injury and protocols. Butler (ankle), KZ Okpala (wrist), Dewayne Dedmon (knee), Markieff Morris (neck), Victor Oladipo (knee) and Bam Adebayo (thumb) are all out.
Of the five Heat players in protocols (Udonis Haslem, Duncan Robinson, Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, and Marcus Garrett) only Strus was upgraded to probable with the rest confirmed out.
Portland Trail Blazers
For those who enjoy all offense and zero defense the Blazers – Hawks match Monday served their ideal fodder. That Trae Young scored 56 points dishing 14 assists and the Hawks still lost should resonate with their squad that it’s time to invest in both ends of the floor.
For the Blazers it was a bit different scenario as their starting backcourt were both out with CJ McCollum still sidelined (12th game) from the lung puncture and Damian Lillard getting a night of injury management for his abdominal tendinopathy.
Despite missing their top two scorers the Blazers stepped up as Anfernee Simons delivered a career-best 43 points including nine 3-pointers along with three rebounds and seven assists.
Jusuf Nurkic returned from protocols to post a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds plus five assists. Norman Powell (26), Nassir Little (22), and Ben McLemore (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
While Young connected on seven 3-pointers it was the Blazers who feasted from the perimeter hitting 18 of 41 deep balls (43.9%).
Most of the Blazers who were in protocols are expected back Wednesday except Cody Zeller. However, Lillard (abdominal) and CJ McCollum (lung) are both out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Blazers are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Blazers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Heat
- The over/under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Miami Heat vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Although the Blazers are favored it’s by a slim margin and even though the Heat limps into the Moda Center missing the majority of their core the one thing Erik Spoelstra’s team will do is defend.
Having lost two consecutive games (Kings, Warriors) on this five-game Western road trip and Phoenix looming this weekend expect the Heat to come out aggressively with Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro taking advantage of the Blazers’ absent defense.
