The Heat started to right the ship on its recent four-game homestand, which started with a loss to the lowly Atlanta Hawks. Miami came back to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz by single-digits.
But then, in typical Heat fashion, it lost an absolute stinker in the fourth and final game to the Orlando Magic, 105–90.
It was a stinker in more ways than one. Hassan Whiteside, who sat out the entire fourth quarter for the fifth time in the last six, left the bench with under a minute to go in the game because he said he had to go to the bathroom.
Whiteside just hasn’t gotten on well in Miami ever since he signed that huge deal in 2016, worth about $100 million for four years. He’s often criticized, whether it be for lack of effort or poor free throw shooting.
This time, he’s being critiqued for not being able to hold it any longer. Whiteside said he held it as long as he could and that he’s been having stomach problems. Eric Spolestra called the move “unacceptable.” The Heat is handing the issue internally.
This will be the second game of a back-to-back for the Suns, who are scheduled to be in Portland on Thursday evening.
Devin Booker will miss that game with a hamstring injury he re-aggrivated in Phoenix’s twenty-four-point loss to the Lakers on Saturday night. TJ Warren will also miss the Portland game with an ankle injury. Head Coach Igor Kokoskov said they will likely miss this game, too.
That doesn’t leave Phoenix with much. Both guys missed the Suns’ most recent game, a seventeen-point loss at home to the Kings. De’Anthony Melton, a second round draft choice earlier this year, led the team with twenty-one points. It was by far his biggest scoring output this season.
Dragan Bender has taken a step back after the Suns took him with the fourth pick, overall, in the 2016 Draft. He’s playing 5.5 minutes per game after playing over twenty-five in all eighty-two games a year ago. Still, Bender has managed to average a three-point shot per game and he’s hitting that shot just over fourteen percent of the time.
Phoenix’s other first round rookie, Mikal Bridges, is shooting just forty-one percent from the field and just over thirty from three. The NBA scouts never considered shooting to be one of his strengths but he won’t continue playing twenty-plus minutes a night if he can’t improve the outside stroke over the next couple years.

Free Miami Heat vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction: Miami in a close one.
I guess Miami is the lesser of two evils here. I see this one being close because it’s what Miami does. I’ll take the Heat to win, but not by much more than three or four.
