Monday, November 15th, finds the Miami Heat playing the Oklahoma City Thunder squad for the first time this season.
The Heat ended their three-game losing streak via a 111-105 win in Utah while the Thunder four-game win streak came to end via a 96-120 beat down courtesy of former franchise star Kevin Durant and his Nets.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Heat winning both contests. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Heat in 40 of their 66 matches.
Miami Heat
The Western road trip threw a wrench into what was otherwise a great start to the season. A rout in Denver, an overtime loss to the Lakers, and a three-point loss to the Clippers equated to the team’s three-game losing streak.
Then, leader Jimmy Butler suffered an ankle sprain sidelining him early versus the Lakers and kept him pinned to the bench possibly until the team returns to Miami.
To say Miami was desperate to stop the bleeding knowing how difficult that task would be especially in Utah would be putting too fine a point on things but they showed their mettle and grit.
Miami built a 27 point lead and looked primed for an easy night and then the Jazz decided to make a run of 18 consecutive points while holding the Heat scoreless. Ultimately, Miami bent but they didn’t break.
Tyler Herro led the way with 27 points and eight rebounds but it was the scoring of Duncan Robinson that was the more welcome sign. Through 12 games he was averaging 9.9 points and shooting 31.2% from deep.
A concerning regression given his 41.5% career 3-point efficiency. Against Utah, he scored 22 points hitting six of 11 from the perimeter (54.5%). Kyle Lowry offered 21 [points while Bam Adebayo and PJ Tucker each scored 13.
Jimmy Butler (ankle) is questionable to play Monday. Markieff Morris (whiplash) remains out and Victor Oladipo (knee) has yet to debut this season.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder hosted a match on Sunday featuring the stars of the young franchise’s past – – Kevin Durant and James Harden versus the face of the future Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
OKC made a game of it early but eventually, the two superstars pulled their Nets ahead to hand the Thunder their first loss in five games That alone is an accomplishment for OKC particularly when so many pundits expected them to easily be the worst team this season.
Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 23 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. It is going to be very interesting to follow what happens in OKC because the one major takeaway of the four-game win streak was the full range of the Canadian’s burgeoning talent.
Opponents could never speed him up and he’s always had the ability to drive to the basket looking like he was gliding on skates but now he’s pulling up for logo 3-pointers.
It begs the question of whether SGA will want to stick around for years of rebuilding. Again I point to that logo 3-pointer which he took with about 1:16 in the game and OKC only up by three.
That shot told everyone he wants to win and believes he has the credentials to be a go-to option.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Thunder are 5-4-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
