Wednesday, November 10th, finds the Miami Heat facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time this season. Both teams last played Monday with the Lakers needing overtime to edge Charlotte while Miami got routed by Denver in a game that ended with drama.
Much has changed for the Lakers since these teams played for the title in the bubble and while the Lakers have overhauled their roster the Heat have made upgrades but essentially retained their core from that title run.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Heat winning both contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Heat in 37 of their 66 matches.
Miami Heat
Through three weeks of play, the Miami Heat have looked like the best team in the Association. Most thought they’d be okay in the regular season but their true assets would shine in the postseason.
Turns out the addition of Kyle Lowry has improved the Heat offense and not surprisingly their starting unit is perhaps the best defensive starting group in the league.
They began this week as the only team ranked in the top five of all three key categories – offense (3rd), defense (4th), and net differential (2nd). That they’ve played a more difficult schedule than some of the other top teams (Warriors, 76ers for example) speaks volumes.
This week serves up another test as they begin a five-game Western road trip which began in Denver, travels to Staples Center for this back-to-back versus the LA teams, heads to Utah, and finishes with the only lower-tier team in Oklahoma City.
The loss in Denver got heated when Markieff Morris took a cheap shot at Nikola Jokic who retaliated with an even more egregious cheap shot hitting him from behind.
Jimmy Butler was livid seemingly calling the Nuggets to meet him in the hall. After the game, several Heat players waited outside the Nuggets locker room where security stopped them.
Then the brothers of the players got involved as Marcus Morris Sr. tweeted a comment with “NOTED” and Jokic’s brothers created a Twitter account just to respond to that tweet.
This is the NBA, not the NHL so the result will likely be a Jokic suspension and fines to both players plus one heck of a re-match in Miami on November 29th (although the league will likely warn both teams privately to not let it escalate beyond this match).
Los Angeles Lakers
In direct contrast to the Heat, the Lakers have not feasted to start the season despite having an easy schedule. They played six games in a row versus 2021 lottery teams with four wins and two embarrassing losses to the Thunder.
Despite the six wins, there are numerous red flags in LA — they were a rim bounce short of losing to the Rockets, needed overtime to beat the Spurs and Hornets and Ja Morant almost forced OT.
They enter this week with LeBron James sidelined with an abdominal strain that might keep him out much longer than the originally reported week. His status has been updated to “out indefinitely” joining a trio of other players with the same notification.
Anthony Davis will need to be his very best as the schedule turns with the Heat, Bulls, Bucks, and Celtics in four of the next six games. He offered it all versus Charlotte with 32 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and five blocks.
AD got help from Carmelo (29 points) and a Westbrook triple-double of 17 points, 12 rebounds, 14 assists that flirted with another hobble (seven turnovers).
Trevor Ariza (ankle), Kendrick Nunn (knee), and Talen Horton-Tucker (thumb) are the trio who James joins as out indefinitely
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Heat are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Miami Heat vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
It’s bad timing for the Lakers to be facing the Heat given they’re likely to spend a day fuming over the real issue from Monday (getting spanked by the Nuggets).
