Thursday, November 11th, finds the Miami Heat facing the LA Clippers in their first meeting of this season.
The Heat are finishing a back-to-back set having played the Lakers and lost in overtime on Wednesday, The Clippers played on Tuesday defeating the Blazers to extend their winning streak to five games in a row.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Clippers sweeping both games and on a current five-game win streak versus Miami. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 36 of their 65 matches.
Miami Heat
For the first time this season, Miami has lost consecutive games but more importantly lost their top player Jimmy Butler to an ankle sprain in the first quarter against the Lakers.
The Heat arrived in LA dealing with their angst over the Jokic – Morris situation but far more ticked they’d lost two of three games by 17 points.
Brotherhood took on a whole new meaning following the melee in Denver but the NBA took swift action suspending Nikola Jokic a game without pay ($210.4k) for his retaliatory egregious shot to the back of Markieff Morris.
Morris who instigated things with his own cheap shot was fined $50k while teammate Jimmy Butler also was hit with a fine of $30k for trying to escalate the issue further both on and off the court.
In the OT loss, the trio of Bam Adebayo (28 points, 10 rebounds), Kyle Lowry (18 points, 11 assists), and PJ Tucker (10 points, 13 rebounds) all registered double-doubles while Tyler Herro scored 27 but missed pivotal shots in clutch time.
It’s carpe diem time for the Heat who need to pad their win column and create some distance between themselves and counterparts who are dealing with injuries or stumbled to start the season.
It’s essential Miami stays focused particularly over the next 30ish games with an abnormally road-heavy schedule featuring 20 of 31 on the road then finish with 25 of their final 40 at home.
While that might not seem like a big deal ask last season’s Conference Finalists the Hawks who are 1–7 on the road how they’d like to deal with that itinerary right now.
LA Clippers
After their 1-4 start the Clippers are back on track having won five games in a row following Tuesday’s defeat of the Blazers. Paul George has upped his game producing like he did three seasons ago in OKC when he elicited MVP talk.
In the win over the Blazers, all five starters and one reserve scored in double-figures. George spearheaded the effort with 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and three 3-pointers.
Reggie Jackson is also back in form scoring 23 points. Nic Batum (22), Isaiah Hartenstein (14), Eric Bledsoe (11), and Ivica Zubac (11) were the others to score in double-figures.
Certainly, the improved play of George and Jackson has been partially responsible for the turnaround but the Clippers improved perimeter shooting has also been a key factor.
Through their first five games, LA shot a cumulative 65 of 205 from the perimeter for 31.7 percent. In contrast, during the five-game win streak, the Clippers have shot 76 of 184 or 41.3 percent from deep.
Marcus Morris Sr. (knee) has missed the last eight games and is questionable for Thursday. Jason Preston (foot) and Kawhi Leonard are out indefinitely.
