Saturday, November 27th, finds the Miami Heat facing the Chicago Bulls in their first meeting of this season. Chicago is playing the second game of a back-to-back set having routed the Magic (123-88) in Orlando on Friday.
The Heat is finishing a four-game road trip in Chicago having traveled to Washington, Detroit, and Minnesota. So far they are 1-2 on the trip having beaten the Pistons but lost to both the Wizards and Wolves.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Heat winning two of the three contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Heat in 60 of their 118 matches.
Miami Heat
Sometimes a lengthy road trip can have lingering effects that show up once a team returns home. In the case of the Heat, it feels like this current road trip is being impacted by the previous Western trip that featured harder opponents with key Heat players going down injured.
While Miami was able to win the last two games of their trip and return home to extend the win streak to four they’ve been sputtering a bit against teams they should beat. Specifically, the loss to the Wolves seems suspect although Minnesota has been on a run of late.
With two days’ rest you can bet the Heat spent extra time preparing for this match and like the Heat has done when facing other Eastern elite squads will be focused on getting in the minds of the Bulls in case they face them in the playoffs.
To wit, run through the Heat win column, and in every case where the Heat played a top Eastern opponent or team earmarked to have a shot at a deep playoff run got their very best effort.
Miami took out the Bucks, Nets, and Hornets (who began the season strong) by 10 plus points and beat the Jaz on both occasions. Given the current stumble with two losses in the last three games, I’m expecting another dominant Heat performance in Chicago.
As for the loss to the Wolves, not counting overtime games it was only the third match Miami lost by more than 10 points (Celtics, Nuggets). It was clear the Heat were fatigued as Minnesota pounded them 59-39 in the second half.
Five Heat players scored in double-figures ranging from 14 to 18 points but only Kyle Lowry of the starters had a plus differential as he led the reserve unit who made some leeway in the second quarter.
Chicago Bulls
Similar to the Heat, the Bulls have witnessed some fall-off after returning from their own West Coast trip and entered the match versus the Magic having lost two games in a row, and badly at that, considering they allowed the Rockets to capture their second win of the season.
The best news for Chicago is they got back their big man Nikola Vucevic and pounced on the Magic.
Four Bulls average double-digit scoring: Zach LaVine (26.1), DeMar DeRozan (25.8), Nikola Vucevic (13.7), and Lonzo Ball (12.4).
The Bulls starters have been dominant this season but with Vucevic missing games and recent losses, the starting group dropped to third overall in points scored per game (81.0) behind the Raptors and Celtics.
The Bulls bench also slid down from 27th to 29th in scoring (26.4) so if they could improve upon that output with Coby White back that could impact their ability to win a few close games.
Billy Donovan didn’t have to overtax his starters given the easy victory as DeRozan led the scoring with 23 points while LaVine (21), White (20), and Vucevic (16) were the other double-figure contributors.
Patrick Williams (thumb) is out for the season.
