Friday, November 5th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Washington Wizards for the first time this season. The Grizzlies arrive fresh off taking two games in a row from the Nuggets while the Wizards lost to the Raptors marking their second loss in a row.
Last season, the squads played twice with Memphis winning both matches and are on a current four-game win streak. The Grizzlies hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 28 of their 49 matches.
Memphis Grizzlies
If there was any doubt that Ja Morant was built to be a leader he’s answering that call this season. Sure, he’s an incredible talent but it’s his character and demeanor on the court no one can ignore.
Teams are always looking to build an identity and often times it’s the coach who the squad emulates. But, with all due respect to Taylor Jenkins, the Grizzlies are Morant’s team and it’s his gritty, defiant nature that permeates throughout the roster.
After taking the first of two consecutive matches versus the Nuggets (who I’m on record believing is the West dark horse) I expected Denver to come out with more fire on Wednesday.
Instead, the Grizzlies were the team that showed up prepared and aggressive. Memphis punched Denver in the mouth with an opening 37-19 frame. The Nuggets responded with a 36-19 second quarter and kept the heat applied after the break taking a five-point lead into the fourth.
Yet, the final frame went to the Grizz and offered up optimism that Jaren Jackson Jr. is ready to ascend. Triple J opened the quarter hitting back-to-back triples, collecting three in the quarter as part of his 11 point frame while Tyus Jones and Desmond Bane showcased why this Grizzlies squad is so exciting.
As the Nuggets fought back to take the lead it was Morant who took over clutch time (albeit with a Desmond Bane 3-pointer to help) to clinch the victory.
Six Grizzlies scored in double-figures with Jackson Jr. leading the way (22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 triples). Morant had a cold shooting night but still registered 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Washington Wizards
The Wizards opened the season against the Raptors but the team they faced on Wednesday was drastically different and while they battled, once the Raptors pulled ahead it never felt like the lead was in jeopardy.
This points to the fact, teams aren’t taking the Wizards for granted after their 5-1 start coming prepared to defend and battle a team much deeper and more resilient.
In the loss, Bradley Beal led his team with 25 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a block. Montrezl Harrell who feasted in the season opener against Toronto (22 points, nine rebounds) was solid again although he earned nine of his 15 points at the line.
Harrell registered a double-double with 10 boards and was one of five Wizards in double-figures. Kyle Kuzma went off for 11 points and 15 rebounds in the opener but was held to two points and two rebounds in the rematch leaving in the third with a forearm bruise.
Davis Bertans (ankle) is expected to remain out until next week. Kuzma (forearm) is questionable. Anthony Gill (calf), Rui Hachimura (personal), Thomas Bryant (ACL recovery), and Cassius Winston (hamstring) are all out with no update on a return date.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Grizzlies are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
The teams sport identical points per game (110.9). That said, while the Wizards won’t want to drop three in a row, it’s hard to imagine these upstart Grizzlies won’t find a way to win after dispensing of the Nuggets in consecutive games.
