Thursday, December 29th, the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. Memphis will host the second meeting on February 5th.
Both teams last played Tuesday with the Grizzlies losing 108-125 versus the Suns while the Raptors lost 113-124 to the Clippers.

Memphis Grizzlies
Ja Morant isn’t about to backtrack on his comments but privately you have to wonder if he’s regretting saying them. It’s very on-brand for the star to suggest no one concerns them but his choice of words gave every team outside the Celtics chalkboard fodder.
Since his comment, Memphis has lost four of five, dropped from first to third (-1.5), and has six teams between 0.5 and 3.0 games back of them hot on their heels.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.2 points per game ranking 10th overall. Memphis shoots 46.4% from the field ranking and 34.4% from the perimeter ranking 21st in both areas.
The Grizzlies own the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.9%, rank 10th for opponents scoring 111.7 points, and 18th for perimeter percentage of 36.1%.
Danny Green (knee) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
There is a major difference between the Raptors’ core and other struggling teams.
They aren’t veteran-laden (Heat, Lakers), struggling to establish an identity (Wizards), trying to fix a broken system (Bulls), incorporating a massive change to the core (Wolves, Hawks), or dramatically increasing the roles of their youth (Warriors).
Constancy remains with four Raptors who were part of the 2019 title run and another eight were part of the 2021-22 fifth-place team plus they own all their first-round picks.
The biggest issue for Masai Ujiri is this team hasn’t been healthy enough to gauge their potential. Nick Nurse has used 17 different starting lineups and if you don’t think that matters ask the Bucks who used three different lineups recently and have lost four in a row.
Nurse will have to continue navigating health as Fred VanVleet (back spasms) and Christian Koloko (knee) both left the last game and are questionable for Thursday.
But there is some good news – Precious Achiuwa who missed the last 22 games practiced with the team and was upgraded to questionable. The hope is Otto Porter Jr. (missed 26 games) will be back early in the New Year.
On offense, the Raptors score 111.4 points per game (21st) shooting 45.2% from the field (26th) and 32.8% from deep (29th).
Defensively, the Raptors allow 111.2 opponent points per game ranking (7th) while shooting 48.9% (29th) from the field and 35.9% (16th).
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Raptors are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Grizzlies are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games against Toronto.
- The Raptors are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games played on a Thursday.
- The Grizzlies are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
J.B. Bickerstaff said ‘this team is not what their record says’ regarding the Raptors which is true but they’re desperate for some good fortune in the health department (or an injection of trades to bolster the bench depth).
VanVleet struggles to stop speedy guards at his best, so playing him at less than 100 percent could be asking for trouble. Conversely, Donovan Mitchell was held to eight and 12 points in his last two matches versus Toronto, so expect a ton of Anunoby on Morant.
