Wednesday, December 15th finds the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers tipping off in their second meeting this season. Portland won the initial meeting (116-96) on October 27th. Memphis will host the next two matches on December 19th and February 16th.
The Grizzlies last played Monday in a 126-91 oust of the 76ers who were without Joel Embiid while the Blazers are finishing a back-to-back set that began with a 107-111 overtime loss to the Suns.
The Blazers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 53 wins in 95 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies winning two of the three contests.
Memphis Grizzlies
Jaren Jackson Jr. returned to the lineup (22 points, four rebounds, two assists, steal, two blocks) after missing a game with knee soreness and the young Grizzlies followed his lead in routing the 76ers who were missing both Joel Embiid and Seth Curry.
It’s hard to feel that badly for Philly when Ja Morant has missed nine games and Memphis has been navigating constant absences of their core either due to injury or COVID.
Dillon Brooks missed the Lakers match last week but two negative PCR tests in 24-hours got him back quickly and his presence without Morant has been critical. He led the scoring against Philly with 23 points adding six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
De’Anthony Melton led the bench scoring with 15 points, while Tyus Jones added 13 points and John Konchar scored 11 as the other double-figure contributors.
Entering Wednesday Brandon Clarke (knee) and Sam Merrill (ankle) are questionable while Zaire Williams was downgraded to out and Ja Morant remains out indefinitely dealing with both his knee and COVID.
Portland Trail Blazers
The losing streak has reached six games in a row although the Blazers battled the Suns pushing them to overtime before falling. Dame Lillard is back but CJ McCollum remains out after suffering a lung puncture.
The longer the Blazers losing streak lasts and fell to string together some wins the louder the trade whispers grow. Already there are murmurs Robert Covington and Jusuf Nurkic are available but will the Blazers look at their star backcourt if losses continue?
In the loss to the Suns, Dame did his best to lead his squad scoring 31 points but needing 31 shots to get there plus 10 assists and his perimeter shot is still off (5 of 16).
Nurkic matched Dame’s double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Norman Powell (23) was the only other Blazer to score in double-figures.
Billups only played four reserves with three scoring eight points each (Covington, Anfernee Simons, Ben McLemore).
Cody Zeller (quad) was out Tuesday and questionable for Wednesday while McCollum is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Blazers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The Blazers schedule doesn’t get any easier. In the next 11 they’ll face Memphis twice, the Nets, Mavs, Jazz, Heat, Lakers, and Cavs and arguably, the only “easier” teams on the slate are the Hornets (who are undermanned), Pelicans and Hawks.
Which means if the Blazers don’t want an abrupt reshuffling of their roster they need to win the games where teams are down core talent. Playing a back-to-back won’t help but it sure feels like a must win for Portland.
