Saturday, January 8th finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the LA Clippers in their third meeting this season. Memphis took both prior games winning 120-114 on October 23rd and 120 -108 on November 18th. The final game will occur in Memphis on February 8th.
Both teams last played on Thursday with the Grizzlies pummeling the Pistons 118-88 while the Clippers lost to the Suns 106-89.
Memphis Grizzlies
In the first All-Star fan-ballot return, Ja Morant landed third for West guards behind Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic. Although there are several more rounds of ballots to count it’s likely he’ll be a first-time All-Star.
While Morant is an exciting talent who improves and rises to perform under the brightest lights it’s important to remember he’s only 22 years old and in his third season. Yet, he is the clear and definitive leader of his team.
Not in the same way Luka Doncic is with the Mavericks either – more so their invincibility comes from his belief in them and himself. It’s a rare quality and not one we’ve typically experienced or have comparable examples of.
In the victory versus the Pistons Morant led the way with 22 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Dillon Brooks was back from his stay in quarantine making an immediate impact with 18 points, three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Zaire Williams and Tyus Jones each scored 14 while Brandon Clarke and Jaren Jacksin Jr each chipped in 11 points.
There are several players listed as questionable including the starting backcourt with Morant doubtful to play due to a sore thigh. Desmond Bane (quad) missed the last game and is questionable for Saturday as is Yves Pons (ankle).
As for the players in protocol Kyle Anderson, John Konchar, Xavier Tillman are all questionable. Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
LA Clippers
Injuries and a lack of offense are catching up to the Clippers. Although they had two big wins on the road versus the Celtics and Nets they are the exception, not the norm of late. Case in point, LA is 3-8 through their last 11 matches.
The recent loss to the Suns was particularly harsh given Phoenix is also missing core players. Clearly, the team misses Paul George but during this stretch of losses the Clippers have truly missed Ivica Zubac.
The big man offers rim protection, rebounding, defensive help and does all the little things (like setting solid screens) that don’t show up on a stat sheet. Given LA rank 25th in rebounding and 28th on the offensive glass Zubac’s absence adds to their issues.
In their loss to the Suns, they lost the rebound battle 49 to 63 and paint scoring 28 to 52. They enter this game with the goal of taking advantage of this brief three-game homestand because after they’ll hit the road for 10 of 11 games.
Ivica Zubac (conditioning) is questionable while Luke Kennard (quarantine) and Jason Preston (foot) were downgraded to out. Isaiah Hartenstein (ankle) is out indefinitely. George (elbow) is out 3 to 4 weeks and Kawhi Leonard continues to work back from a torn ACL
