Thursday, December 23rd, finds the Memphis Grizzlies playing the Golden State Warriors for the second time this season. Memphis won the initial meeting in overtime (104-101) on October 28th. They’ll play twice more in Memphis on January 11th and March 28th.
Both teams last played on Monday with Memphis losing 99-102 to the Thunder while the Warriors returned home from a five-game road trip and beat the Kings 113-98.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors winning two of the three contests. The Warriors have won 50 of the 96 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although Ja Morant returned to the court on Monday it wasn’t a warm welcome from everyone as he told reporters post game some fans were yelling at him to sit back down (OUCH).
Although Memphis amassed a 10-2 record without Morant, make no mistake the Grizzlies are better with him on the court. To wit, he served up 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds, two steals, and a block.
That they lost to the Thunder especially after holding a late lead was a bit puzzling but consider how much shade the Thunder took after losing by 73 points to Memphis with most of their core out injured.
The rematch featured numerous players who didn’t participate on December 2nd who were laser-focused on making sure this was a competitive game.
From the Memphis side of the equation four of the five starters hit double-figures while Steven Adams pulled down 14 rebounds. Specifically, Desmond Banes led scoring with 25 points, Dillon Brooks offered 19 points, and Jaren Jackson Jr. pitched in 15 points.
Ultimately, it was the reserves who failed to help Memphis as they were outscored 37 to 21.
Although Morant is back the Grizzlies still have several players on the injured list but none in quarantine. Of the six Grizzlies out Tyus Jones (finger) and John Konchar (foot) are listed as questionable for Thursday.
Brandon Clarke (knee) will miss his 10th game as he plus Zaire Williams (ankle) and Santi Aldama (calf) were downgraded to out as well. Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Turns out the Warriors electing to send home Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Otto Porter Jr. and Andrew Wiggins likely saved all of them (except Wiggins) from getting exposed to COVID.
Wiggins had already contracted the virus but so far the other four players remain unaffected while eight Raptors are now in quarantine including two (Siakam, VanVleet) who caught COVID last season and all five of their starters.
Although the first game back home after a long opposite coast trip often results in a let down the Warriors forged ahead missing two starters with six players scoring in double-figures.
Curry is still in a mini shooting slump (comparative to his typical prowess) scoring 30 points but hitting only four of his 12 long balls. Green was masterful posting a triple-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists plus two steals, and two blocks.
Damion Lee got the start dropping 18 points while Gary Payton II (12), Otto Porter (12) and Iguodala (10) offered double-digit scoring.
Lee joined Wiggins and Jordan Poole as Warriors in health and safety protocols. Klay Thompson (Achilles) is expected to return in the New Year while James Wiseman (knee) continues to rehab.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games.
- The Grizzlies are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Golden State’s last 14 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Memphis’ last 10 games.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
Memphis is eager to end their two-game mini losing streak but even more invested in showcasing they can deliver the same defensive effort executed while Morant was out.
Meanwhile, the Warriors will have to avoid thinking ahead to the big Christmas Day event and utilizing their depth without Wiggins, Poole or Lee available.
I like the Grizzlies to keep the game close but Steph, Dray and Iggy using their veteran wiles to get the win.
