Sunday, November 20th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Brooklyn Nets for the second and final time this season. In the initial meeting on October 24th, the Grizzlies won 134-124.
Memphis arrives at this contest having last played Friday in a 121-110 win versus the Thunder while the Nets are back home following a four-game road trip that finished Thursday with a 109-107 win versus the Blazers.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Grizzlies taking both contests and holding a current seven-game win streak versus the Nets. The Grizzlies hold the advantage all-time having won 29 times of the club’s 52 meetings.
Memphis Grizzlies
It sure didn’t take long for Jaren Jackson Jr. to demonstrate how much he improves the Grizzlies, particularly defensively.
In just his second game back Triple J delivered an impressive double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds.
He added two steals and three blocks (that’s eight blocks in two games for those counting!). Ja Morant had a cold shooting night (5 of 20) but managed 19 points aided by his free throws (9 of 10).
But with his big man back Morant was able to impact the game in other ways registering a near triple-double with 11 assists, and seven rebounds. And the third Grizzly to collect a double-double was John Konchar with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 114.4 points per game ranking 13th overall while shooting 46% from the field (21st) and 36.2% from the perimeter(13th).
Defensively, Memphis allows opponents to score 113.2 points per game (16th) shooting 46% from the field (tied 10th) and 36.2% from the perimeter (20th).
While it was expected the trio of Bane, Williams and Green would be out the big news is Ja Morant who tweaked his ankle will also miss this match, hence why the spread likely swung so heavily in the Nets’ favor.
Desmond Bane (toe), Ziaire Williams (knee), and Danny Green (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
November 1st was the last game Kyrie Irving was active as the Nets suspended him prior to their next match. In the 18 days since the team registered a 5-3 record playing 7 of 8 on the road.
Under Jacques Vaughn, the defense dramatically improved and despite allowing Sacramento to score 153 points (most by any team this season) they rank 11th in opponent scoring allowing 111.4 points per game.
Brooklyn focuses on slowing the pace and packing the paint, paying less attention to the perimeter which is highlighted via the disparity in opponent field goal (44.7%) versus perimeter (38.5%) efficiency and the third versus 27th ranking.
It’s a mixed bag on offense where the Nets average 110.7 points per game (18th), shooting 47.8% from the field (6th) and 36.2% from the perimeter (tied 14th).
Irving is expected to return to the court for this match so it will be interesting to see how he fits into the new defensive direction and whether his presence is completely positive or drama filled.
Kyrie Irving (suspension) was upgraded to probable. TJ Warren (foot) remains out.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
As noted the big advantage for Brooklyn is the absence of the Grizzlies’ starting backcourt as well as Ziaire Williams. That puts a ton of pressure on Jackson and Dillon Brooks to pick up the slack.
Even shorthanded the Grizzlies will try to steal the win and while the Nets should collect the W, I’m still not uber-impressed by this Brooklyn roster.
After two-plus weeks of less drama, it’ll also be intriguing to witness how the home crowd deals with the return of Irving and whether they welcome him back with open arms or at the first sign of any rust or lack of defensive intensity if they let him hear it.
It might not be rational, but I suspect Taylor Jenkins will emphasize defense so I’m taking the Grizz and the points.
