Joining the NBA New Year’s Day full slate of games are the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio who’ll play their second match of the last three days.
The Lakers won the initial match 121-107. The contest was marked by historic events one on the court and one personally for a certain superstar draped in purple and gold.
The Spurs own the all-time record winning 89 of 175 matches between the clubs. This past season played three times last season with the Lakers sweeping the 2019-20 regular-season series.

LeBron James celebrated his 36th birthday with a victory punctuated by his 26 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.
Five others joined him in double-figure scoring including Dennis Schroder (21), Anthony Davis (20), Wes Matthews (18), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (10), and Montrezl Harrell (10).
Through the early season, the Lakers’ offense has been humming along with occasional defensive struggles. Much of that can be logically tied to a truncated offseason and integrating so many new players,
LA’s two losses were to the offensively gifted Clippers and Blazers. Meanwhile, their trio of victories occurred with easy win margins so the unknown is how the team will handle crunch time or needing to win on a final shot.
James is nursing a sore ankle and is questionable for Friday while Alex Caruso (personal) is definitely out.
San Antonio Spurs
Assistant coach, Becky Hammon made NBA history when she became the first woman to assume the role of head coach. The situation occurred after Gregg Popovich was ejected in the second quarter.
The Spurs have entered a new era focusing more on their young core particularly Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker, Derrick White, and the suddenly rising Keldon Johnson.
It’s allowing Popovich to once again tweak the Spurs’ schemes as they play faster, transition to playing positionless lineups and shoot more 3-pointers.
To wit, even the mid-range assassin DeMar DeRozan is getting up more perimeter attempts.
In the loss to the Lakers, Dejounte Murray led the way with 29 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. DeRozan added 23 points while Patty Mills (12) and Lonnie Walker IV (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
White (toe) is listed as probable for Friday while LaMarcus Aldridge (knee) is questionable, and Quinndary Weatherspoon (knee) is definitely out.
